Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) for Veterans Health Administration (VHA). In the Sterile Processing Service, Boise VA Medical Center.
Duties
Major Duties:
-The incumbent functions as Chief of SPS, SPS is the central point within the health care system which patient care medical/surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment are received, processed, package, and distributed.
-The Decontamination Unit which receives all soiled supplies, instruments, and equipment from internal and external sources. Decontamination processing requires the knowledge to determine what specific means are utilized to accomplish cleaning, disinfecting, pre-cleaning, or pre-sterilization of complex, diagnostic equipment's, and reusable medical equipment of critical, semi critical, and non-critical.
-Ensures the timely delivery of necessary items to patient care areas while maintaining appropriate stock level within SPS. Inventory distribution systems for consumable an equipment to include the receipt of devices from surgical details staff a minimum of 48 hours prior to use.
-The incumbent is responsible for efficient and effective organizational structure of the program, including ensuring the availability of a large number of separately recurring medical supplies and equipment items.
-The incumber exercise direct supervisory responsibility for planning, directing, and coordinating the complexities or an intergrade sterile processing activity, allowing for coverage through three shifts with alternate shifts deployed to support workload.
-The Chief of SPS maintains responsibility for determining resource allocations to support clinical programs based upon demand, availability, and known clinical acceptance.
-The Chief of SPS must issue, adapt, implement, and maintain local SPS policies and procedures as applicable to specific medical programs.
-The incumbent is responsible to ensure that all departmental policies for RMD comply to VA regulations, manufacturer's guidelines, and other applicable regulations.

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience and/or Education
(1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
(2) Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
(3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
GS-10 Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)- Chief
(a) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Ability to implement and incorporate regulations, policies, and procedures to manage SPS operations.
2. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment, develop options, and make recommendations.
3. Ability to integrate SPS managerial duties, which includes strategic planning of facility organizational goals and integration of SPS vision and values within the organizational mission.
4. Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues.
5. Skill to initiate and lead interdisciplinary groups in order to facilitate daily SPS functions.
6. Ability to analyze and interpret fiscal data in order to forecast resource and equipment needs.
Preferred Experience: Requirements provided in VA Handbook 5005. Part II, Appendix G47. Certified Registered Central Service Technician certification within 12 months and Certified Healthcare Leader certification within 24 months required.
