This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Specifically, the provider should possess the expertise and competency to perform the following: 1. Make oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity and its adjacent tissue and structures. Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions. Administer local anesthesia. Complete dento-alveolar surgery, including simple, surgical, and complex exodontia, pre-prosthetic surgery, bone grafting, sinus and ridge augmentation, and vestibuloplasty procedures. Accomplish and arrange for patient consultation, work-up, admission, medical/dental specialty and inter-disciplinary care, completion of surgical procedures, and provide for post-operative and follow-up care of patients presenting with illnesses, injuries, and disorders of both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral & maxillofacial regions. Complete oral & maxillofacial surgical procedures including but not limited to treatment of facial traumatic injuries/facial fractures, treatment of pathological conditions such as benign cysts/tumors, orthognathic surgery, biopsy procedures, and TMJ surgery. Provides clinical supervision, treatment planning, and educational activities related to the Dental Service AEGD-1 Residency Program and to dental staff assigned to their clinic location as needed Adheres to safety, health, and infection control standards, and demonstrates knowledge in the use and reprocessing of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME). Responsible for clinic administration in compliance with VHA, Medical Center and Dental Service Directives, Policies and Procedures. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.) Education: Degree of doctor of dental surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed. (2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence. Residency or Comparable Experience: Completion of an approved residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. "An approved ADA recognized residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery" Licensure: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia. The dentist must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Residency or Comparable Experience. Completion of an approved residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. English Language Proficiency: Dentists appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: . Long periods of standing, walking, sitting, and bending are required. 1. Sitting at computers for long periods using Vista, CPRS, DRM+, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and other programs as required. 2. Utilization of telephone to place and receive phone calls from patients, staff members, and others is required. 3. Pushing dental instrumentation and equipment on carts down the hallway and lifting instruments and equipment from the carts to the dental delivery unit. 4. Standing on stools and lifting overhead to retrieve and store supplies and equipment. 5. Lifting of patients from gurneys or wheelchairs into the dental chair for exams, x-rays, and treatment is required.
