Duties
Provide technical assistance in the field of botany to the Rock Springs Field Office, the Kemmerer Field Office, and the Pinedale Field Office, on vegetation related management activities.
Serves as a team leader/member on NEPA ID teams. Provides input and quality control for special status plant species. Prepares NEPA documents as needed and assigned.
Provides quality control for special status plant species input into the land use planning process and prepares planning sections as assigned.
Coordinate inventory and monitoring of native, invasive, and special status plant species and habitats and maintain reference databases and maps. Review and evaluate vegetation monitoring programs to assure compliance with policies
Develops and maintains contacts with other federal agencies, the academic community, non-government organizations and special interest groups. Keeps offices informed on changes in laws, regulations, guidance, policy, and science.
Participates in community outreach and environmental education.

For GS-09: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:
Knowledge of plants commonly found in Southwest Wyoming and their habitat requirements, the NEPA process, applicable statutes and regulations.
General skill in written and oral communication used to gather and report information.
-OR- Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
- OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience; i.e. for GS-9, only education in excess of 1 year of graduate-level education may be combined with experience.
For GS-11: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:
Working knowledge of plants commonly found in Southwest Wyoming, habitat requirements of common and special status plant species, the NEPA process, applicable statutes and regulations.
Working level skill in written and oral communication used to gather and report information.
-OR- Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
- OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience; i.e. for GS-11, 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree may be combined with experience.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Work may be in an office or field setting. Field work requires long days in the field and the incumbent must be capable of working in mountain and/or semi-arid areas as well as lift more than 50 pounds. The incumbent must be able to withstand exposure to high winds and extreme temperatures over rough terrain on foot. The incumbent may be required to fly as an observer in light aircraft at low altitude in gathering data.
Work Environment: Work that is performed in the office is performed in a typical office setting. Field conditions include the full range of topographic conditions, ranging from rolling desert plains to steep mountains. The incumbent will, on occasion, be required to tolerate high/low temperatures, travel in aircraft, dust, and high levels of noise and vibration.
Education
In addition to the experience requirements described in the Qualifications section of this announcement, you must meet the Individual Occupation Requirements of this position as follows:
- Degree: botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany.
or
- Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Evaluation of Education: Courses in basic botany, plant anatomy or morphology, cytology, histology, genetics, taxonomy or systematics, algology, mycology, ethnobotany, and those dealing with specific problems of a botanical nature or with specific groups of plants are qualifying.
