Central Ohio VA Health Care System is seeking a NP for Primary Care. Duty location is the Newark Community Based Outpatient Clinic. The NP collects and synthesizes patient data utilizing critical thinking skills to formulate a comprehensive plan of care. He/she consults with a variety of services, coordinating care to meet patient needs. The NP will evaluate a broad spectrum of PC conditions for patients throughout the Central Ohio VA Healthcare System.

The NP assignment is with the PC Departments at the Chalmers P. Wylie Veterans Ambulatory Care Center. The NP is responsible and accountable for the care s/he provides. Patient care standards are identical to those followed by all PC Providers. S/he must possess the skills needed to effectively work with others, to communicate directions, and help.
The NP's responsibility includes functioning with the scope of practice as outlined below and within the NPs nationally recognized certification, i.e., Adult, Family or Geriatric Nurse Practitioner certification.
The NP will adhere to all current directives of VHA, and meet current Joint Commission standards, and VA-OIG expectations.
The NP will intentionally create opportunities to leverage virtual care technology to support the mission of the facility and VA at large.
The NP reports directly to the Chief of PC Department service. It is the Chief of PC Department service, or designee, who has direct control over work assignments and leave approval. Collaboration regarding clinical practice will be in consult with the Nurse Executive or designee. Prior to taking issues to the Nurse Executive, the immediate supervisor shall be consulted.
The NP meets the needs of both the internal and external customers while supporting the mission of the VA by consistently communicating and treating customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. In addition, s/he provides customers with consistent information according to established policies and procedures and handles conflict and problems constructively and appropriately.
The NP protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy. Every effort will be made to protect the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alternation, or unauthorized deletion. Work will be performed following applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc., as set out in the computer access agreement that the employee signs.
The NP Delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned patients while developing technical competencies (VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G6). The Nurse I/Level 1 registered nurse is a novice nurse with limited experience with the situations in which they are ultimately expected to perform. This is the dependent stage of working closely with a preceptor with a goal of developing skills and judgment to utilize the nursing process in real situations.The focus is on individual growth and development in practice with increased levels of self-direction. The novice brings principles and theory with limited application of critical thinking skills.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Master's or Doctoral Degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission (ACEN-Formerly NCLAC) or the Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Nurse Practitioners must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.
Preferred Experience: One year of Primary Care experience at the Nurse Practitioner Level
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.

Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. S/he may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. S/he must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Applicants must possess the mental and physical ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment. Physical requirements may involve lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, and repeated bending. S/he must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as TB screening or testing on hire, as a condition of employment.
