The primary purpose of this position is to Serves as a working leader for inspection, corrosion control, prevention and treatment of structural and ancillary components for ICBM missile sites at Malmstrom AFB, MT.
Duties
- Serves as team leader and Maintenance Team Chief IAW AFI 21-202.
- Performs the duties of Shop Quality Control Evaluator and Shop Instructor.
- Prepares various surfaces of interior and exterior components of buildings and other structures.
- Mixes, thins, blends, matches, tints, and tones coating materials used in performing maintenance on Nuclear Missile Weapons Systems, components on Launch Facility, Missile Alert Facilities and Missile Support Equipment/Vehicles.
- Apply coating materials using brushes, rollers, spray guns and other specialized methods to include metal spray (metallization) on Nuclear Missile Weapons Systems and components on Launch Facility, Missile Alert Facilities and Missile Support Equipment/Vehicles.

- Shift work may be required; may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Emergency overtime may be required.
- A valid vehicle operator?s license is required. The ability to obtain and maintain a class B CDL license is a condition of employment. Required to operate government vehicles up to 32,000 GVW straight truck.
- Will be required to obtain and maintain certification as ICBM Technical Instructor IAW directives and train and/or guide lower graded employees and assist other workers in various crafts.
- Will be required to obtain and maintain certification as ICBM Quality Control Evaluator IAW directives and perform required inspections and evaluations on lower graded employees.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Maintenance Team Chief Certification as a condition of employment.
- Will wear respirators or Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) as required.
- Ability to complete all collateral training to include but not restricted to, Missile Safety, Nuclear Surety, Personnel Reliability Program, and Hazardous Waste Training as a condition of employment.
- All requirements for dispatching to remote missile sites as a condition of employment.
- Will be inspected quarterly by direct observation by certified QA Evaluators for job performance and must meet the requirements for ?Maintenance Evaluation Program (MEP)?and Production Inspector (PI) as a condition of employment.
- Exposure to toxic paints, chemicals, cadmium, lead, hexavalent chromium, formaldehyde or other hazards. Position requires annual occupational health examinations as a condition of employment.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain Firearm qualifications and Shotgun training as a condition of employment.
- Dispatch to and from LFs and MAFs is required. Remain over Night (RON) at a Malmstrom AFB might be required due to inclement weather, timelines, and safety reasons.
- This is a Testing Designated Position. The employee is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug testing as a condition of employment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance and PERSONNEL RELIABILITY PROGRAM (PRP) certification as a condition of employment.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4700 General Maintenance & Operations Work Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER without more than normal supervision; the ability to lead.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge and ability to perform mechanical procedures, use and maintain specialized tools and equipment employing a variety of skills including pipe fitting and plumbing, electrical maintenance, component disassembly/ reassembly and routine maintenance. Use and maintain specialized testing equipment to test surface profile, confined space air sampling, coating thickness and security entry/monitoring equipment.
2. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, procedures and nuclear weapons safety rules.
3. Knowledge of electrical testing procedures and AC/DC circuitry, use of electrical test equipment, multi gas air sampling equipment and procedures.
4. Skill operating personal computers to complete training, perform equipment operation testing, required competency courses and documenting maintenance actions.
5. Knowledge of current Federal, state, local, and Air Force regulations pertaining to environmental laws and hazardous waste management. Skill and ability to comprehend and apply Air Force publications, technical orders and manufacturer's instructions pertaining to nuclear missile maintenance operations for the mixing, use, and applications of coating materials.
6. Knowledge of accepted surface preparation and coating application techniques including special finishing techniques, thinning and use of additives. Skill in tinting, toning, matching, and blending coating materials as well as determining the methods, techniques, devices, and materials best suited to obtain the surface condition and finish required.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The Work Leader will be subject to crawling, bending, and standing in various tiring and straining positions in very tight places. Requires lifting, carrying and pulling equipment weighting up to 70 lbs on a regular basis. Prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and in situations where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. The work may be at extreme heights. Must be able to work in confined areas exposed to heights over 90 feet (launcher closure apron walls) using safety harness and lanyards. This requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, be strapped into swing stages, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Ability to lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, may be required to handle materials and equipment that weigh 70 pounds and over.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is done inside and outside, with dirt, spray, and fumes usually present. The technician is sometimes required to prepare, treat, and finish surfaces outside in all types of weather. Work is done in areas where hazardous explosives, rocket engine propellant MMH, toxic vapors, Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen, Hydrogen Sulfide, lower explosive limit, and fluids. Often extreme weather conditions with below zero temperatures, severe winds averaging 50 MPH and wind chills of 30 below zero and temperatures over 100 degrees F. Exposure to Hantavirus (a deadly rodent spread virus), dirt grease, oil and various cleaning chemicals. Will be often working with exposure to falls of 30 to 90 feet. Will often work at heights up to 90 feet in confined areas (Launcher Closure abutment walls). Must comply with missile safety requirements and wear all required safety equipment with each task. OSHA, Air Force, base and shop safety directives requires protective equipment and clothing such as safety shoes, safety glasses or sun glasses, gloves, rain gear, hard hats, coveralls, respirators and other protective gear are required, which are usually heavy and uncomfortable. Must comply with TWO PERSON CONCEPT in No Lone Zones at all times. Frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts and bruises; may occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Subject to expanded shifts, directed job delays/stoppages, and overnight stays.
