This Supervisory DRT (MRI) position is assigned in the Eastern Colorado Healthcare System (ECHCS) to the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center (RMRVAMC) Imaging Service in Aurora, Colorado. The incumbent functions as section supervisor for a group of advanced DRTs at the GS-10 level and below, which may include support staff. The incumbent evaluates new products and equipment and makes recommendations to the supervisor concerning upgrades and new purchases that would improve operations.

Duties

The duties include, but are not limited to: The incumbent develops and maintains protocol manuals for procedures performed in the section and is responsible for implementation and adherence to all safety practices and policies for the section. The incumbent directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff. This DRT provides full oversight and supervision in the MRI section at the medical center to facilitate MRI studies and procedures, and ensure appropriate patient care, MRI safety, administrative, supervisory, and regulatory requirements are met. This position serves as the Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) within ECHCS and operates with full responsibility for training developing and directing the MRI Safety Program, working closely with and under the direction of the MR Director, to ensure safe operation of the MR areas. The employee possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of MRI protocols, MR safety, the VHA MRI Safety Directive, and in the overall radiology department operations and exhibits the ability to judge effectiveness of the operation. The Supervisory DRT has the responsibility to monitor and evaluate subordinate's performance, formulate plans, delegate authority, and follow-up on delegated tasks. This position requires knowledge of new and recent developments in the field of diagnostic imaging, in particular MRI and MRI safety, and processes to implement and maintain the MRI program. The Supervisory DRT employee at this level is fully functional as an Advanced DRT in MRI and can carry out the assigned tasks independently. Time shall be spent 50% administrative, 50% in the incumbents diagnostic imaging certified specialty as a DRT in MRI, or as directed. The incumbent supervises a group of advanced DRTs at the GS-10 level and below and may include support staff. This specialty modality requires additional knowledge of super conducting magnets, the physics of superconducting magnets, and how they relate to the human anatomy in medical imaging. The technologist must be highly educated in the safety factors governing a magnetic environment that patients, visitors, and equipment enter. The practitioner must have specific specialized knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and how it relates to the soft tissues and vessels of the human body. The technologist must also have a specialized knowledge in the radiofrequency surface coils required for each specific anatomical area to be imaged. The technologist requires knowledge of image acquisition in Computerized/Digital Radiography (CR/DR) and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS). This subspecialty requires advanced ARRT certification in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR). The incumbent will have significant administrative duties including the coordination of the MR safety committee meetings, evaluation of hospital equipment to ensure MR safe operation, and oversight of employee and patient MR screening programs. The incumbent shall coordinate training of hospital staff and ensure maintenance of educational documentation. The incumbent uses word processing software to execute several office automations functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files, activating printers, inserting, and deleting text, formatting letters, reports, and memoranda, and transmitting and receiving e-mail through Microsoft Outlook. The Supervisory DRT will also use the Veterans Health Information and Technology Architecture (VistA) to access information in the Medical Center Computer System, mammography tracking software, and the hospital Picture Archive and Communication Systems (PACS) for patient information/image storage. Other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. May include weekends and holidays, at the discretion of management, to meet operational needs of the service. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Credentialing Standards. Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field. Grade Determinations: Experience: Applicants are required to have at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS10) level directly related to the position being filled that fully demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.To be creditable, experience must have demonstrated possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities, and other characteristics (also referred to as clinical competencies) associated with current radiologic technology practice. This may have been evidenced by the equivalent of one year of active practice, which is paid or nonpaid employment as a DRT as defined by ARRT.General Radiologic Technology (R). DRTs perform procedures and examinations in hospitals or clinics under the direction of radiologists and other medical officers. The objective of the examinations and procedures is to produce radiographic studies that are used in medical diagnosis and interpreted by medical officers to locate injuries, foreign bodies, pathological conditions, or lesions within the body. They prepare and administer contrast media and medications in accordance with State and Federal regulations. All DRTs must be knowledgeable in computerized [and digital radiography (CR/DR),] and picture archiving and communications systems (PACS).Part-time experience as a DRT is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a DRT would receive one week of full- time credit for each two weeks of half-time work. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): A. Knowledge of overall radiology department operations, and the ability to judge effectiveness of the operation. B. Ability to monitor and evaluate subordinate supervisors' performance. C. Ability to formulate plans, delegate authority, and follow-up on delegated tasks. D. Knowledge of new and recent developments in the field. E. Skill in participating in organizational national initiatives and/or intra agency workgroups, or Committees. F. Ability to draft and/or recommend organizational national policies and/or directives. Preferred Experience: Must be ARRT (R) and (MR) registered. At least 3 years supervisory or lead experience in MRI or other section in Diagnostic Imaging MRSO certification is preferred. References: Title 38 or Hybrid Title 38 Occupation official qualification standards of the position as stated in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-25. Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work include heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; speed in working; and emotional stability. Long periods of sitting or standing with computer work requiring keyboard/mouse operation. Patients sometimes are assisted to achieve proper positioning which may require reaching or work in strained positions. English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
