Duties

Demonstrates a high level of coordination and integration of a number of important and complex natural resource unit segments of professional, scientific, technical, managerial, and/or administrative work. Formulates, plans, and provides managerial expertise regarding all aspects of staff operations within the units managed, and supports its major natural resource programs. Establishes long-range plans and schedules and is responsible for having the knowledge and "sense of place" as a major provider of natural resource products and services in the ever-changing Forest Service. Collaborates, coordinates, and enters into agreements to provide natural resource products and services to Forest Service units, as well as other Federal agencies, state governments or similar entities. Coordinates with and advises officials of other units or organizations and higher level management officials. Provides leadership, allocates resources, and implements activities to accomplish Forest Service multicultural organization direction, and Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights requirements, goals, policies, and objectives. Performs as a supervisor.

Requirements

Basic Requirement: GS-0401 Series: Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major field of study that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Related course work generally refers to courses that may be accepted as part of the program major. OR Combination of education and experience that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, AND experience sufficient to demonstrate that I possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation that is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field needed to perform the work of the occupation. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-14 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 in federal service. Qualifying specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Provided counsel to higher organizational levels concerning district, forest or equivalent natural resource program issues and their current and anticipated effects; exercised direct program responsibilities that included district, forest or equivalent program development, planning, budgeting, and identifying workforce and organizational needs to establish and meet priorities; and/or developed and sustained relationships with one or more of the following: external partners, members of the public, representatives of agencies or tribal governments, to anticipate and resolve natural resource management conflicts and issues. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
