This is a Hydrologist GS-1316-12 vacancy within the Caribbean Florida Water Science Center of the United States Geological Survey located in Davie, Florida.
Salary range: GS-12: $88,262 (Step 1) to $114,741 (Step 10)
Duties
As a Hydrologist within the Caribbean Florida Water Science Center in Davie, Florida, some of your specific duties will include:
Conduct hydrogeologic investigations using state-of-the-art knowledge of hydro-stratigraphic, sequence-stratigraphic, micropaleontological, geochemical, and surface and borehole geophysical methods, including:
-Interpretation and attribute analysis of seismic reflection data.
-Collection and use of borehole geophysical data.
-Development of detailed core descriptions.
Plan, propose, and manage hydrogeologic investigations by:
-Identifying deficiencies in the hydrogeologic understanding of water managers.
-Developing a plan and the required budget to conduct the work necessary to address these deficiencies.
-Proposing the plan to interested USGS partners
Manage the Carbonate Aquifer Characterization Laboratory (CACL) including:
-Overseeing quality assurance procedures.
-Ensuring safety protocols are followed.
-Tracking progress of staff on work assignments.
-Interfacing with staff supervisors to report on work progress and staffing needs.
Communication of scientific and technical information:
-Prepares scientific reports, technical reports, or journal articles summarizing results and findings of investigations.
-Creates data releases.
-Delivers oral presentations of technical analyses and results, to audiences of various technical experience.
-Communicates technical information effectively with coworkers, stakeholders, and cooperators in meeting-type settings or other forms of communication
Qualifications
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics.
OR
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. AND
For GS-12: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include planning and executing complex hydrologic studies, which usually involved intensive investigations into recognized phenomena. This work typically involved conventional methods & techniques though it required going beyond clear precedents, and required adapting methods to the problems at hand and interpreting findings in terms of their scientific significance. At this level, Hydrologists have a very good knowledge of the principles of hydrology and their application, and the ability to independently perform scientific work of considerable difficulty.
