This position serves as a Maintenance Worker in a BLM field office for the Coos Bay or Medford District Office.

Duties

Responsible for site and facility maintenance including but not limited to, Recreation sites, Road Maintenance Shops and Communication Sites. Maintains and repairs sites and structures with an emphasis on public and employee health and safety, to a standard that reflects highly on the organization. Is responsible for all the department's needs relating Potable Water Systems. Utilizes tractors and implements, motor vehicles, chainsaws, hand and power tools to accomplish daily tasks as well as special projects such as carpentry, plumbing, basic electrical, cement finishing, and custodial. Develops and maintains good working relationships with other departments and workgroups on district, site hosts and volunteers, and the general public. Purpose of partnerships is to reach district goals and build program support. Determines type, amount, and location of work to be accomplished under the direction of supervisor. Heads up assigned projects while maintaining good communication with supervisor and co-workers/peers. Evaluates and prioritizes projects based on health/safety hazards, structural issues, and aesthetics.

Qualifications

There is no required length of time of qualifying experience or training. However, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to support the SCREEN-OUT Element of: Your ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: (1) Conducting plumbing, carpentry, painting and concrete repairs of structures and kiosks; (2) Assembling and installing fireplace grills, picnic tables, information kiosks, signs, and exhibit structures; (3) Applying paint coatings using standard methods e.g., brushing, rolling and spraying, using pre-mixed paints and stains, two-part epoxies, and weather protective coatings; (4) Removing broken concrete, preparing subsurface for repair, mixing, preparing and pouring concrete in accordance with specifications; and (5) Repairing facility plumbing needs including, but not limited to, vault toilets, faucets, drains, hot water heaters and drainage systems. The physical ability to carry moderate loads, hike over rough terrain, climb steep slopes, drive a 4X4 truck pulling a trailer, operate equipment, and use power and hand tools. The work requires walking, stooping, bending, lying flat and repeated lifting. The incumbent must have good vision, reaction reflexes and depth perception. Physical demands require coordination for hand, eye and body. The incumbent must exert physical effort related to actions such as lifting (10-100 pounds), pushing, pulling, carrying objects of various weights, sizes and shapes, walking, climbing, crawling and bending. Working Conditions: Work is performed in all kinds of environments from an office setting to project sites in rough and steep terrain. Field work involves vehicular and foot access and may involve accessing remote areas. Temperatures may range from near zero to over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Weather may include periods of rain, snow and heavy winds. Weekend and Holiday work will also be required. Employee is expected to use and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) while working with noisy equipment; using power and hand tools; when using chemicals and paints in cleaning, whitewater rafting or boating, and other maintenance and construction activities. Work involves some duties that put employee in proximity of noxious gases and fumes. It is expected that employee will wear PPE such as respirators while conducting these tasks and use positive ventilation to reduce risk. Construction work sometimes involves working high above ground level. It is expected that PPE will be used during these activities.
