This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Duties
Dentist are licensed independent practitioners that practice based on their specific approved privileges and guidance derived from VHA, Medical Center, and Service Directives/Memorandums. All Supervisory Dentists will provide direct patient care in an outpatient setting to an adult patient population with a high percentage of acute and chronic medical conditions. Supervisory Dentists report directly to the Dental Chief or the Assistant Dental Chief. Supervisory Dentists are assigned to a section or clinic to oversee the daily operations of the service.
Duties:
1. Make oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity
2. Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions
3. Administer local anesthesia
4. Perform routine and complex restorations of teeth
5. Perform simple and complex extractions of teeth
6. Perform alveoplasty and other routine surgical procedures
7. Perform prosthetic dentistry to include immediate dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, crowns, and fixed bridgework.
8. Perform routine endodontic procedures on single and multi-canal teeth
9. Perform routine and surgical periodontal procedures
10. Provides supervision of dental staff assigned to their clinic location
11. Responsible for clinic administration in compliance with VHA, Medical Center, and Dental Service Directives, Policies, and Procedures
12. Assists Dental Service Chief in everyday activities and requirements of the dental service
13. Ensures all the clinical provider's evaluations are completed timely. FPPE/OPPE are up to date
14. Ensures all the performance evaluations are completed on time
15. Reviews incoming consults and ensures they are scheduled promptly
16. Has the ability to run reports required to monitor clinical activities
17. Has the ability to use Vista Applications when appropriate

Dentist Basic Requirements
A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Preferred Experience: AEGD / GPR Residency Completion

Physical Requirements: The incumbent should be physically and mentally capable to perform the examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan, and educate residents. Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 4 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position. See VA Directives and Handbook 5019, Employee Occupational Health Service.
