This position functions primarily in Pharmacy Service and the outpatient care areas within the VA Medical Center and the Community Based Outpatient Clinics.

Duties

Care in the Community (CITC) Pharmacy Technician maintains Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), provides administrative support and works collaboratively with other members of an expanded health care team including community providers, pharmacists, social workers, dietitians, behavioral health staff etc. creating a smooth process for management of Community Care Network (CCN) prescriptions. Incumbent is responsible for all activities and functions generated by their assigned section on a day-to day basis. This position functions primarily in the Outpatient Pharmacy area to support the provision of timely and quality pharmaceutical care. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: Reviews all prescriptions from CCN providers to determine if eligibility requirements are met by using appropriate software application(s). Documents in accordance with established procedures and prepares paperwork to assist pharmacists in preparation of prescriptions. Documents Veteran interactions and communicates with providers via electronic health records (EHR) when necessary. Discusses Veteran needs with VA and community providers to ensure appropriate and reasonable utilization of VA formulary and resources. Utilizes current legislation appropriately as a basis to document disapproved requests and ensures that the Veteran and/or requesting provider are duly notified. Supports and ensures the Service and Medical Center policies, procedures and guidelines, government regulations, and profession/technical standards concerning drug control, drug security, and drug accountability (including medical supplies) are always maintained. Provides medication distribution services in assigned area which may include outpatient window dispensing and automatic dispensing systems and filling and shipping of medication orders. May be the first line of communications between the Service and Veteran, caregivers, clinical staff or administrative staff to service Veteran needs either in person or by phone. They may answer routine questions regarding availability of drugs and dosage forms. Questions pertaining to professional areas such as chemistry, pharmacology, clinical needs of Veterans and specific or complex drug information will be referred to a pharmacist. The attitude, conduct, and appearance and work performance of the technician will contribute positively to the successful operations and efficiency of the Service. Receives telephone calls from Veterans through the automated call distribution system. Answers Veteran inquiries in technical nature and related to general processes. Refers clinical and other questions requiring decision making to higher level technicians or pharmacists as appropriate. Documents Veteran interactions and communicates with providers in EHR when necessary. Provides patient education via telephone on medication refill process, use of automated telephone system and general information on outpatient services. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. English Language Proficiency. Medical Technologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Policy Education. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. Grade Requirements: GS-06: Experience. Must have 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the full performance level (GS-5), which is directly related to the position to be filled. Your resume should demonstrate specialized experience that reflects your ability to complete the duties of GS-6 Pharmacy Technician. Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to the following including receiving prescriptions from patients in writing or electronically from physicians; prepare prescriptions by counting, pouring, weighing, measuring, and mixing the medication if necessary; maintain patient profiles, prepare insurance claim forms, stock, and take inventory of medications; prepare medications for inpatients in various settings, including sterile product preparation. Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required. Knowledge, Skill & Abilities (KSA). You must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: 1.Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action. 2.Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. 3.Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. 4.Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. 5.Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. 6.Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. Preferred Experience: Minimum of one year Pharmacy Service experience. A current certification from the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required.
