Incumbent is responsible for operating a transportation system between various VA Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS) facilities, VA/DoD medical centers, other medical centers and private residences. This job consists of driving various vehicles while transporting patients, employees, cargo and mail to the different destinations. Position aligns under Supply Chain.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires long periods of driving, lifting and normal dexterity. Moderate to heavy physical effort is required in the frequent handling of patients. Incumbent must be able to help nonambulatory patients from vehicles, wheelchairs or gurneys. Such lifting may require considerable physical exertion, since some patients are debilitated or paralyzed. Patients must be moved correctly while using proper body mechanics to prevent injury. Moderate physical effort is required in handling objects weighting up to 30 pounds and occasional handling of objects weighting over 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo. The incumbent is required to work outside and is occasionally exposed to inclement weather conditions while loading and unloading vehicles. Drives in all types of traffic, weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. The operator is subject to cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading or unloading vehicles. Incumbent may be required to clean potentially infectious spilled bodily fluids such as blood, urine, vomit, and feces from vehicles and equipment. Training to be provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Incumbent will be required to work irregular tours of duty.
