The Medical Supply Technician (CensiTrac Coordinator) for Veterans Health Administration (VHA) located in Las Vegas, Nevada. The incumbent is responsible for the oversight of the SPS automated equipment tracking system in the Sterile Processing Services (SPS).
Duties
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNED DUTIES:
The incumbent is the Censitrac Coordinator Medical Supply Technician (MST), Sterile Processing Service (SPS) that will have knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as required by this position. The incumbent will be required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and preparation of RME appropriate to this position. The incumbent will be able to demonstrate their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of RME appropriate to this position. VA Southern Nevada Health Care System (VASNHCS) is a facility in VISN 21, composed of a highly complex integrated healthcare system including multiple Operating Room (OR) specialties, a full-service Dental clinic, ENT/Speech Clinic, and Cardiac Cath Lab as well as six Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). Sterile Processing Service is a direct patient care impact Service and operates 24 hours a day, five days a week, On-call coverage on weekends and holidays.
FUNCTIONS OR SCOPE OF ASSIGNED DUTIES:
This is a full performance level position as a Censitrac Coordinator MST responsible for the oversight of the SPS automated equipment tracking system in the Sterile Processing Services. In this position, the incumbent responsibilities include management, creation, trouble shooting, problem solving, monitoring, and maintaining instrument tracking systems as well as coordinating, maintaining, and monitoring instrument maintenance and repair.
- Initiates tracking reports and data analysis for SPS.
- Coordinates with SPS Management, Logistics, Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) Coordinator, and SPS Quality Assurance for all new purchased and leased instrumentation.
- Receives, schedules, refers, and contacts members of the staff, agency, and persons outside the agency ranging from other government agencies to the general public.
- Additionally, this position will do correspondence and reports to RME, SPS, VISN, Services, and other Government Agencies and public corporations that deal with SPS.
- Knowledge of sterile processing procedures, surgical instrumentation, surgical procedures, sterility, and aseptic techniques is required to perform the duties.
- Typing, computer skills and facility office software knowledge is required to perform the duties.
- The position may be assigned to work as needed on other than normal working tours of duty or shifts, either in the evenings and/or on weekends. Such scheduling for other than normal working tours of duty will be assigned as needed by the Chief, Sterile Processing Services (SPS).
- Complete training coursework and VA SPS certification as required for a Sterile Processing Technician position in the VA.
- Maintain certification by completing approved, annual Continuing Education Units (CEU) and annual in-service hours.
- Knowledge of Censitrac IMS and the functions within the software are required.
- Laser certification and operation of a laser marking unit (NuTrace) is recommended
- Yearly EIL (Equipment Inventory List) must be performed for the accountability of all trackable assets, which correlates with the IMS tracking system. Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) The incumbent will have knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as required by this position. The incumbent will be required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and preparation of RME appropriate to this position. The incumbent will be able to demonstrate their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of RME appropriate to this position.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The employee is under the supervision of the Chief, Sterile Processing Service. The supervisor and/or Service Chief will assign work with standing instructions on objectives, priorities, and deadlines, and provides guidance for unusually involved situations. The employee will work as team member with other Medical Supply Technicians of various experience to carry out the training of others utilizing the written standard operating procedures and/or manufactures written instructions in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted/standard practices. The supervisor evaluates completed work for overall technical soundness and conformance to agency policies through competency assessment utilizing simulation, direct observation and verbal responses from the incumbent.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Grade Determinations: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-7).
GS-08 Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Ability to read and interpret written procedures and select appropriate action in order to instruct staff in correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.
2. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to ensure staff compliance with written directives, rules and regulations.
3. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
4. Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures.
5. Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-8. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-8 to GS-8.
Physical Requirements: This work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation), gastrointestinal intestinal endoscope reprocessing hub, and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus. The incumbent may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. The work requires proper body mechanics when standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages/instrument trays (occasionally weighing as much as 25 pounds). The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation.
On a regular and recurring basis, the employee alternates between a contaminated environment and a carefully controlled clean environment. The employee wears special clothing, hair covers, personal protective equipment and shoe covers that can be uncomfortably warm. The employee uses insulated gloves to remove carts from sterilizers. The employee is subject to burns from accidentally touching hot items. The hazards of working around minute quantities of sterilizing gasses are unknown. The employee often works around body fluids, mucous, excretions and bits of tissue, some of which may be foul smelling. Strong, unpleasant odors are encountered while decontaminating bloody or grossly contaminated instrumentation or reusable medical equipment. The work area is noisy due to the clatter of metal instruments, rumbling of carts and operation of pre-sterilizing equipment.
