This position is located at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, Augusta GA, Engineering Service. The position is a Laborer in the Facilities Management Service. The Duties include receiving assignments from the Building Maintenance Supervisor, orally or in writing, outlining the work to be done by specific methods and equipment to be used in accomplishing the tasks assigned.
Duties
MAJOR DUTIES
Major duties will include replacement of stained ceiling tiles, and pulling trash throughout the courtyard and exterior areas of the Medical Center for beautification.
Mowing grass, working shrubs and flower beds, planting and transplanting trees, shrubs flowers; moving furniture and office equipment ; removal of debris, limbs, and other trash; excavating, back filling, and maintaining tools and equipment in first class condition.
The Laborer has a working knowledge of the tools used in moving, cultivating and other work on the grounds, and general knowledge concerning the work to be done; familiar with the operating characteristics of these tools to ensure that the tools are used safely; Maintains and cleans tools and equipment including but not limited to checking oil, changing spark plugs and sharpening blades.
Skill and Knowledge Required by the Position
Performs user maintenance requirements and demonstrates operational skills for grounds maintenance equipment: This work includes such activities as mowing with industrial walk behind mowers, fertilizing with walk behind spreaders, slanting and cultivating with rotary tillers, pruning and sawing with gasoline hedge trimmers and chainsaws, sweeping, raking and hauling debris; activities to include mowing with industrial walk behind mowers, riding mowers all types and front deck mowers not to exceed 72" in cutting width; lifting, moving, loading and unloading of equipment, furniture, materials, debris trash etc.; hauling materials to and from jobsites such as dirt, shrubs, pine straw; excavating, dismantling and removing in connection with projects and other work.

Qualifications

Working Conditions: Work is performed in all areas of hospital environment, including work outside in hot and cold weather where it is often dusty and dirty; general medical and surgical, neuropsychiatric and tuberculosis wards and research areas; frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises from sharp edges of tools and materials, and strains, from lifting; subject to exposure to chemicals, which may cause skin irritations and burns; subject to insect bites and stings and exposure to poisonous plants such as poison ivy and poison oak; exposed to hazardous moving parts when operating electrical and gasoline powered equipment.
Laborers follow safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in he work area. Mishandling of the equipment, tools, and tasks involved at this level may result in more serious injuries.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.
