The work is occasionally done inside a shop or similar where the incumbent is exposed to flying chips, splinters, or noxious fumes. Shop work may also expose the incumbent to noise and the presence of sawdust in the air. The use of some preservative materials, epoxies, and chemicals, or exposure to lead-based paint or other hazardous materials associated with historic buildings may require special training in their handling and the use of special protective equipment and clothing which is sometimes uncomfortable.
