The Durham VA Health Care System is seeking a skilled dedicated Registered Nurse to join the Raleigh 1 Ambulatory Care team. The Raleigh CBOC maintains the health and manages the care for patients with a variety of medical problems including hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, congestive heart failure and other chronic diseases.

Duties

The Raleigh 1 clinic is designed to provide comprehensive primary care services, including gender specific care to male and female veterans. The clinic is staffed by providers (attending physicians, mid-level providers), registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, pharmacists, social workers and veteran experience coordinators (VEC's). An RN/LPN has an encounter with patients on each visit for screening, education and referrals. Using protocols, nursing staff can order tests, lab work, enter consult requests and administer immunizations. Medication management is provided by the clinical Pharmacist. Nurse visits provide care for patient issues not requiring a provider appointment, for example such as blood pressure checks, blood sugar monitoring, medication administration, immunizations, ear irrigations and education related to disease/self-management and equipment The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM), in collaboration with the Nurse Manager, functions as a supervisor and assumes accountability for the operation of the designated hiring unit. As a supervisor the ANM is not eligible for National Nurses United (NNU) membership. Responsibility includes the management, evaluation, and implementation of evidenced-based nursing practice. The ANM is responsible for executing his/her duties in a manner that demonstrates leadership, clinical expertise, and creative approaches to the management of patient care for adult and geriatric patients, in accordance with the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act, Medical Center, and VAHQ standards of Practice. The ANM and the Nurse Manager are a high functioning team, working cohesively to create a positive work environment which enhances care delivered by nursing and other allied health care staff within the VA Durham Healthcare system. The ANM will make sound fiscal decisions when requesting supplies, approving time off, and authorizing overtime in compliance with unit and hospital financial goals. The ANM is also responsible for coaching, mentoring, and supervising subordinate staff. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Minimum of 5 years successful nursing practice Minimum of 2 years in leadership roles of charge nurse, committee chair or other counsel leader support staff, etc. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with patients, families and other members of an interdisciplinary team Demonstrated history of collaborative relationships with inter-professional staff and other support services and organizational leadership Documented evidence of knowledge and skill including (but not limited to):Change management, problem solving, customer relations, decision making, priority setting, organization, critical thinking Ability to work independently of Nurse Manager oversight Knowledge of JCAHO standards and Patient Safety Goals Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. The full performance level of this vacancy is Nurse III. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of Nurse I to Nurse III. Physical Requirements: Per VA Directive and Handbook 5019 - a physical examination will be conducted based on the physical requirements of the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. Regarding this specific RN position, the population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. The VA Medical Center is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with admissions for medical co?morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
