Duties

If selected for this position, you will serve as an Information Technology Specialist in the Cyber Investigations Office, responsible for conducting digital forensic examinations relating to criminal and administrative investigations. The duties are as follows: Conducts computer and mobile device forensic examinations where a computer or other electronic means is used in the commission of a crime. Uses automated methods to recover evidentiary data from Microsoft, Linux, UNIX and other operating systems, to include network-based systems penetrated by unauthorized parties. Prepares comprehensive forensic examination reports for case agents, prosecutors and management officials in accordance with DOJ OIG Investigations Division policies and procedures, as well as reflective of current trends and techniques within the law enforcement and professional communities. Testifies before Grand Juries, courts of law, or administrative hearings in support of forensic examinations, opinions, or other investigative matters. This includes producing reports and illustrative materials for interpretation and conclusions. Participates in professional development including forensic associations and scientific symposiums or working groups. Participates in national or regional computer forensic associations. Maintains certifications in related forensic disciplines.

  • You must successfully pass and are subject to random drug screenings.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-13 grade level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level obtained in the public sector. (Specialized experience is paid or unpaid experience which has equipped you with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.) Examples of specialized experience include such duties as: Significant experience applying knowledge of data structures, operating systems and software applications in the examination of digital evidence. Experience conducting independent digital forensic examinations of computer operating systems, network devices, and mobile devices with little supervision or guidance. Experience administering and securing computer operating systems and/or network devices. Experience examining computers that may have been subject to common adversary tactics, techniques and attack vectors. Experience networking and backend IT infrastructure including server configuration and standing up a virtualized environment for a digital forensic laboratory preferred. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade level (or equivalent).
