About the Position: This Microbiologist position works within the Biochemistry Office, Department of Clinical Investigation, located at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, TX.
Duties
Performs a wide range of laboratory assays and procedures in support of Department of Clinical Investigation projects and/or research protocols assigned to the Bench Laboratory Services (BLS) section.
The Microbiologist will recover, identify, and conduct tests on microbiological pathogens from a variety of sources.
Determines the method(s) to be used: selects culture media, reagents and/or systems for specific tests to accomplish biochemical, enzymatic or molecular reactivity patterns.
Implements and/or assists in the development of new experimental tests and analytical procedures under the direction of the supervisor.
Pathogens and Knowledge of biochemistry immunology, microbiology, and related methods and procedures with primary professional knowledge required is microbiology.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or expereince requirements described below. BASIC REQUIREMENT FOR MICROBIOLOGIST:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) performing a variety of diagnostic microbiological procedures for patient samples including complex analyses and infrequently requested tests; 2) evaluating abnormal results; 3) using and maintaining equipment with responsibility for quality control in a regulated laboratory at a medical treatment facility.
OR
Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
