Performs work in a clinical laboratory providing a range of diagnostic functions to include blood-drawing procedures, assisting patients, and specimen processing. Provides assistance of a technical, specialized, or support nature to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions. Supports medical and health care professionals in tests and procedures to diagnose and treat medical conditions.

Duties

The incumbent performs a wide variety of duties and responsibilities within the Tallahassee Outpatient Clinic, Laboratory Section such as: - Performs work in a clinical laboratory providing a range of diagnostic functions to include blood-drawing procedures, assisting patients and specimen processing. - Performs a range of diagnostic support duties such as taking and labeling specimens for the laboratory. - Adheres to safety, infection control and universal precaution at all times while drawing blood, to include such things as site preparation, removing tourniquets, wearing gloves and protective gowns and following all isolation procedures while drawing patients. - Maintains records for routine patient test or laboratory transactions. - Receives samples for testing into the laboratory; labels specimens, centrifuges samples and distributes them to the appropriate area. Work Schedule: 8:30am - 5:00 pm (M-F) Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician~/ 573-05860-A Physical Requirements: The physical demands are primarily standing and walking, but also some bending, lifting and carrying light items. The work requires above average agility and dexterity.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-05 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: 1) Adheres to safety, infection control and universal precaution at all the times while drawing blood and working with patients' samples. 2) Performs standard diagnostic tests or procedures such as venipuncture according to written procedure or directed by the physician or other professional staff. 3) Supports duties such as collecting and labeling specimens for the laboratory. 4) Receives and relays incoming telephone calls and messages; receives verbal requests for add-on tests and verifies specimen availability and accuracy of request. 5) Ensures appropriate handling and timely delivery of specimens to main Laboratory. Note: Evidence of specialized experience must be supported by detailed documentation of duties performed in positions held on your resume. OR Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-05 level. (Must possess Four (4) years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite).
