This position is located on the Resource Inventory and Assessment Division (RIAD) in Beltsville, MD. The position serves as Mathematical Statistician and provides advanced statistical skills in support of RIAD, with a focus on National Resources Inventory (NRI)-related data analysis.

Duties

Provide statistical consulting and data analysis services for Resource Inventory and Assessment Division (RIAD) projects Perform or oversees risk assessments in relation to confidentiality of data. Provide training on statistical methods to NRCS personnel and NRI data users, primarily on proper treatment of the NRI data. Methods could include PowerPoint based training or webinars. Design and conduct analyses and studies using NRI data (raw and processed), possibly in conjunction with data from other sources such as the Agricultural Census, the Forest Information and Analysis Database, and the National Land Cover Database.

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement. BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree: You must possess a Bachelor's or higher degree that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics. (Courses acceptable toward meeting the mathematics course requirement must have included at least four of the following: differential calculus, integral calculus, advanced calculus, theory of equations, vector analysis, advanced algebra, linear algebra, mathematical logic, differential equations, or any other advanced course in mathematics for which one of these was a prerequisite. Courses in mathematical statistics or probability theory with a prerequisite of elementary calculus or more advanced courses will be accepted toward meeting the mathematics requirements, with the provision that the same course cannot be counted toward both the mathematics and the statistics requirement). OR Combination of education and experience: You mustpossess a combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience offered in combination with educational courses to meet the requirements should include evidence of statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying known statistical techniques to data such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. In addition to meeting one of the Basic Requirements listed above, applicants must meet the following Minimum Qualifications Requirement in order to be considered: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying: GS-13 Specialized Experience: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service that included: Applying statistical methods, models, and related software to conduct data analyses; Designing studies using statistical methods and techniques; Measuring and evaluating the impact of data collection errors using survey methodology and quality assurance processes; and Giving presentations to discuss the results of statistical studies.
