This position is located in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Field Organization, Midwest Area (MWA) in Urbana, Illinois. In this position you will serve as a personal assistant to the Research Leader (RL) and other professional staff, coordinating a wide variety of administrative and clerical tasks essential to the program administration of the Soybean/maize Germplasm, Pathology, and Genetics Research Unit.

Duties

Participates in program planning support work such as research project coordination, travel documentation, budget coordination/tracking, agreements, and purchasing/procurement of supplies and equipment, and human resources administration. Provides guidance on preparation of Individual Development Plans for the staff; and may assist in local recruitment and/or hold new employee orientation sessions. Maintains control records and follow-up measures on incoming correspondence and action documents to ensure prompt handling. Keeps managers and scientists informed of upcoming reviews; prepares handouts; if requested, makes presentations related to the procedural and documentation requirements of the reporting system. Uses automated systems and software for travel and voucher preparation. Serves as a primary purchase card holder for the research unit; drawing up purchase orders for procurement of materials and services, and reconciling purchases based on established guidelines.

GS-06: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-06 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with administrative tasks including maintaining detailed records of all purchases necessary for an office environment; and ensuring the accuracy of all documents and correspondence. GS-07: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in the planning and coordinating of administrative tasks and business processes of an office; maintaining and tracking budget information for an office; and using office automation software to create and review documentation and correspondence. All applicants must be able to type 40 words per minute. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
