The Pathology Specialist is assigned to the Administrative Staff Section, Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service, VA Medical Center, Veterans Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Miami, FL.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include but are not limited to: Maintains variety of interactions with staff pathologists, clinical physicians and residents, nursing personnel, hospital administrative and other personnel, and personnel from outside facilities (other VAMCs, VA outpatient clinics, VA central office, College of American Pathologists, other community hospitals, HCF A, etc.). Plans and carries out assignments to accomplish the goals of the service, may initiate and complete new projects which extend the applications of current technologies and incorporate new technological advances. Assists in the training of pathology residents at all levels of training. Surgical Pathology: Manages all daily Surgical Pathology functions, working independently to perform these highly complex functions, or in collaboration with one or more pathology resident(s), medical student(s), technician(s), and technologist(s). Specific tasks include, but are not limited to, the following: Elements of gross examination and sectioning of all types of surgical pathology specimens. Photography of gross specimens (non-formalin-fixed) and maintenance of a teaching collection of gross photographs. Collaboration with pathologists regarding unusual findings during the macroscopic examination and dissection. Investigation and resolution of problems related to Surgical Pathology. Evaluating and implementing new equipment and ordering supplies. Assistance with accessioning, embedding, cutting, staining, and labeling of routine histology as needed. Surgical Pathology Program Management/Teaching: Laboratory inspections: Maintains regulatory compliance related to Anatomic Pathology daily. Reviews regulatory criteria, ensures all procedures and protocols are maintained up to date with regulatory criteria, prepares work areas for inspection, and participates in the inspection process as required by his/her supervisor. Anatomic Pathology protocol development: Develops or participates in the development of Anatomic Pathology protocols. Evaluates new procedures for incorporation into the lab and assesses the effectiveness of the procedures once in place. Quality Assurance (QA): Manages the collection and interpretation of data for Anatomic Pathology QA programs, participates in the service QA committee, and directs and implements quality improvement initiatives approved by the committee. Proposes new QA indicators for consideration and assesses their effectiveness. Autopsy: Supervises all activities related to the Autopsy service. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to, the following: Performance of the autopsy after review of the medical record, correlation of the gross pathology with the patient's clinical presentation, preparation of external and internal descriptions, sectioning, ordering of special studies (e.g., cultures, histochemical and immunohistochemical stains, electron microscopy), and interpretation of same. Oversight of Preparation of Provisional Gross Anatomic Diagnosis (PAD) and Final Anatomic Diagnosis (FAD) reports. Evaluation and implementation of new equipment and ordering of supplies. Photography of gross specimens and maintenance of a teaching collection of gross photographs. Integration of new initiatives and technological advancements: Participates in clinical test development in anatomic pathology areas of the laboratory and contributes ideas for improvements in laboratory functions. Coordinates the integration of new methodologies into the anatomic pathology laboratory and assists other employees in gaining familiarity with the new techniques and procedures. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. and BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: In order to qualify for this position, you must meet the Basic Education Requirement having a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. Select the appropriate responses to the following questions concerning your experience and education to qualify for the position. and SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-12: Must have one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of Genetic Counselor successfully that is equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-11 in the Federal service? Specialized experience includes: having knowledge of about gross anatomy and can recognize pathologic abnormalities in a wide variety of gross specimens; familiarity with gross examination and sectioning procedures allows him/her to adapt these procedures to best illustrate the pathologic processes represented; familiar with permanent and frozen section techniques and standard histochemical stains, with Quality Assurance procedures, laboratory accreditation requirements, and troubleshooting for Surgical Pathology and Autopsy services; ability to interpret specialized tests and laboratory findings; participates in the orientation and training of new employees in Anatomic Pathology; can adapt training techniques to the level of sophistication of the individual(s) being trained; and has a basic understanding of computer functions. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: CommunicationsPlanning and EvaluatingTechnical Competence IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.
