The primary purpose of this position, STUDENT TRAINEE COMPUTER SCIENCE GS-1599-04 potential 07 is to provide a student trainee who has been appointed to the Pathways Program with on-the-job training and guidance to further student technical development.
Duties
1. Perform selected tasks and phases of routine studies and projects that require application of basic occupational field theory and principles in the technical area of Computer Science.
2. Participate with senior personnel in conducting non-routine projects.
3. Provide assistance in planning, monitoring, and conducting special studies, projects, and initiatives.
4. Perform a variety of work assignments consisting of established, specific, and related tasks that have been selected to orient the employee in the occupational field.
5. Study Air Force requirements for the projects and research and study the current body of precedents and technical knowledge.
Requirements
- Must meet suitability requirements for Federal employment
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Must be enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying accredited institution
- Must sign a Participant Agreement
- U.S. citizen or national (resident of American Samoa or Swains Island)
- Must be eligible to work under U.S. immigration laws
- Males Must be registered for Selective Service, see Legal and Regulatory Guidance
- You must be a student currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an approved program
- Pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree (Junior/Senior only), Graduate or Professional Degree
- Enrollment must be at least half-time course load as defined by the education institution (typically six hours or equivalent for undergraduate and three hours or equivalent for graduate)
- Have a good academic standing (no less than 2.95 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale)
- Meet the qualification standards of the position
- Non-citizens may be eligible for employment if Permitted by the DoD Appropriation Act
- Full/part-time employees occupying direct childcare positions are eligible for discounts IAW DAF AFSVC/CC Memo, 30 Sep 22; first child 100% / each additional child 25%. Other assigned CYP and FCC personnel are eligible for 25% discount.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Pathways Internship Programs, and Air Force Qualification Standard for Schedule D, Pathways Student Position. You must submit copies of your transcripts with your application.
To qualify for GS-04: Applicant must have completed 2 academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree in a related field of study.
To qualify for GS-05: Applicant must have completed a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree or completed 4 academic years of pre-professional study.
To qualify for GS-07: Applicant must have completed 1 full academic year of graduate level education; or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.
Conversion
Interns may be non-competitively converted to a term, career-conditional or career appointment within 120 days following successful completion of all of their educational and work experience requirements in accordance with 5 CFR 362.204.

To qualify for a GS-04: Completion of 2 academic years of post high school study or an associate's degree in a related field of study
To qualify for a GS-05: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's degree or completion of 4 academic years of pre-professional study.
To qualify for a GS-07: Completion of 1 academic year of graduate level education, bachelors degree with Superior academic Achievement as provided in the "General Policies and Instructions" for Qualifications Standards Operating Manual (see link below), or 5 academic years of pre-professional study.
To qualify for a GS-09: Completion of 2 academic years of graduate level education or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
