Duties
GS-4 Major Duties
Conducts basic research of topics for the purpose of developing interpretive programs.
Provides pre-established talks where the features are largely self-explanatory and are easily observed and understood as to origin, development, form and significance, and the interpretive service required by the guide is of a repetitive nature.
Presents a variety of formal and informal interpretive programs including orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducted walks, demonstrations, and campfire programs to small groups (less than 25 people).
Provides assistance in connection with one-time or annual celebrations related to the programs and themes of the park and assist in the operations of special events.
Operates a variety of audiovisual and other equipment used in connection with interpretive material, e.g., projectors, microphones, and video equipment.
Performs assignments in visitor centers such as answering a variety of visitor questions. The questions encountered recur repeatedly and usually require use of a limited variety of facts.
Performs various administrative duties, e.g., scheduling, gathering routine information for reports, compilation of statistical data, etc.
Informs visitors about park facilities and resources through roving interpretation.
Uses interpretive props and other materials needed for programs.
Manages and promotes a range of accessibility devices and services to the public.
Operates the park radio, phone, and computer to communicate with park staff and visitors.
GS-5 Major Duties
Conducts basic research of topics for the purpose of developing interpretive programs.
Provides pre-established talks normally following a prescribed outline and requiring application of broad subject-matter knowledge of the features of interest peculiar to the site. Such talks include detailed and specific interpretation and explanation of the outstanding features of the site from the standpoint of scientific or historical interest, the background of events leading up to the natural feature; the facts, events, and circumstances.
Presents a variety of formal and informal interpretive programs including orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducted walks, demonstrations, and campfire programs to medium to large groups (25-50 people).
Answers a wide variety of more complex visitor questions.
Provides assistance in connection with one-time or annual celebrations related to the programs and themes of the park and assist in the operations of special events.
Operates a variety of audiovisual and other equipment used in connection with interpretive material, e.g., projectors, microphones, and video equipment.
Performs assignments in visitor centers such as answering a wide variety of unique visitor questions that arise from personal observation and experiences, areas of interest. Answers to these questions may require sharing extensive facts, events, and circumstances.
Performs various administrative duties, e.g., scheduling, gathering routine information for reports, compilation of statistical data, etc.
Informs visitors about park facilities and resources through roving interpretation.
Uses interpretive props and other materials needed for programs.
Manages and promotes a range of accessibility devices and services to the public.
Operates the park radio, phone, and computer to communicate with park staff and visitors.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/03/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience.
Minimum Qualifications GS-04
EXPERIENCE: At least at least 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience at the GS-3 level. General experience is any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Examples of general experience would be office work, residence or teaching assistant work, etc. Examples of specialized experience includes work that involved oral presentation of historical, scientific or program information to groups; or developing and/or revising technical, historical, or scientific information for oral presentation to groups. Resume must include start/end dates and hours worked per week.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 2 full years of study above high school (60 semester hours) in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is a normal prerequisite. At least 12 semester hours were successfully completed in courses such as American history, science, and/or public speaking. If you are qualifying based on education and you do not submit transcripts, your application will be rated not qualified for consideration. Must provide transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Resume must include start/end dates and hours worked per week. Must provide transcripts.
Minimum Qualifications GS-05
EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include tour guide, museum docent, teacher, etc. Resume must include start/end dates and hours worked per week.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 4 full years of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in American history, science, and/or public speaking OR that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours in such subjects. If you are qualifying based on education and you do not submit transcripts, your application will be rated not qualified for consideration. Must provide transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.

education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
