This position is located in the Electric Shop of the Engineering Service of the Hines VA Medical Center (578), Hines, IL. The primary purpose of this position is to provide on-site leadership to Journeymen Electricians and Electrical Workers and to conduct Quality Assurance checks on all electrical job orders and projects. This position leads three or more workers to accomplish electrician/electrical duties.

Duties

The major duties and responsibilities include: The incumbent shall be called on to advise the Electric Shop Supervisor on matters related to current electrical projects. The assignments are completed on both interior and exterior surfaces. Approximately 1 million square feet of campus area require ongoing scheduled and non-scheduled electrical maintenance. Passes on to other workers the instruction received from his supervisor and gets the work started. Works along with other workers and sets a good and safe rate of production to ensure good quality and good quantity in the jobs completed and within estimated job time. Spot checks work of all shop personnel to assure quality, accuracy and compliance with NEC, local and facility standards including JACO. Assists in writing accident reports, suggestions and/or work simplification. Responsible for providing updated data on all items under the preventive maintenance program, recording on work orders all required data including time, parts, materials, and cost of items used, generates and signs employee's activity sheets. Required to follow all Lockout-TagOut regulations. Performs as a journeyman electrician and leads electricians to accomplish the following; maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of all types of electrical wiring, electrical equipment, lighting systems, emergency power systems, lightening protection systems, ground fault systems, and associated circuitry, control systems and minor construction projects. Responsible for troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, electrical safety inspection and repair of various types of electrical equipment, including, but not limited to, lighting fixtures, floor scrubbers/buffers, dietetics equipment, etc. Maintains and make repairs to electric motors ranging in size from fractional to 100 horsepower motors. Work may include removal and replacement of defective motors and all repairs except rewinding. Performs new construction, including bending and installation of all sizes and types of conduit. This work includes, but is not limited to, installation of new lighting fixtures, switch boxes, receptacles, circuit breakers, disconnects, new wiring cable and all work required for installation of motor driven machines and equipment, including control circuitry. Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering, drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. Determines and place distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and install wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices. Operates and maintains diesel powered emergency electrical generating equipment, including maintenance on all associated equipment. This includes diesel engines, generators, transfer switches, and associated control systems. When assigned, ensures weekly generator inspections and fire pump tests are completed and documented. Skill and Knowledge: Ability to lead three or more workers to accomplish electrician/electrical duties. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, teams being led, and other leaders, to include the creation of reports as required. Ability to meet or exceed customer quality/quantity expectations. Knowledge of the operation and installation of a variety of complete electrical systems and equipment, such as series, parallel, and compound circuits for single and multiple phase alternating current of varying voltage, amperage, and frequency; wiring systems in in buildings; and power or regulating and control circuits and distribution panels to electrical equipment. Knowledge required to work from blueprints, drawings, and sketches, and to use shop mathematics to lay out angles, arcs, and circles. The incumbent must have the ability to plan and lay out the routing, placement, and arrangement of complex systems, circuits, controls, and equipment. Knowledge of the entire electrical service, from the point electrical power enters the facility grounds and throughout its distribution within the facility. This includes all switchgear, transformers, network protectors, knife switches, etc. Voltages range up to 5KV. Knowledge of the various gauges, sizes, and types of wire, conduit, couplings, fittings, relays, boxes, circuit breakers, and other electrical devices, and the ability to arrange and install them in ways that insure proper and safe operation of electrical systems and equip. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent's work requires lifting, carrying, and moving heavy loads. The incumbent is required to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. the incumbent is required to at times be stooping, climbing, standing, walking, squatting, kneeling, etc. Often working in cramped spaces. Working Conditions: Incumbent will be subject to working in varying temperatures while performing assignments in poorly ventilated areas and confined spaces with permit, or under adverse weather. Additionally, heavy physical exertion may be required at times and climbing to considerable heights may be necessary while making inspections or giving instructions. The incumbent may be exposed to normal hazards found in construction areas, high or low temperatures, or adverse weather. The incumbent will work in poorly ventilated areas, hot spots, cold spots and very cramped quarters. Will ensure that the personnel are always wearing their personal protective equipment when working on energized circuits.
