Position is located in the Radiology and CT Scanning department of the Imaging Services department in the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw, Michigan. The DRT is qualified to independently provide routine diagnostic radiologic examinations, portable, operating room, emergency, CT Scanning, Bone Densitometry and fluoroscopy examinations under supervision of a Radiologist or designated provider. The shift is Monday - Friday, 11am - 7:30pm. Recruitment Incentive Authorized

Duties

Technologist will have cross-training in other modalities including but not limited to: CT Scanning and Bone Density (DXA). Technologist must be a registered Radiographer and CT technologist certified and in good standing by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology and have a minimum of one year of professional diagnostic radiology experience. Duties Include (but are not limited to): Performs all routine and emergent diagnostic radiographic and CT procedures such as but not limited to: Fluoroscopy examinations, cervical, lumbar, thoracic, extremity, facial/headwork radiography, cholangiograms, hysterosalpingography, cystograms, RUGs, barium studies and CT Scanning of the abdomen, thorax, head and extremities and bone densitometry. Maintains sterile environment in OR cases and follows OR specific department policies and procedures as required. Adjusts protocol/standardized views to accommodate patient's inability to position due to illness, injury or medical/mental status. Any additional information, pertinent to the patient's exam is annotated/documented by the technologist. Responsible for maximizing daily utilization of fluoroscopic/radiographic/bone densitometry room/CT exam rooms. Identifies scheduled procedures for the day, plans and coordinates activities around scheduled exams, walk-in exams as well as physician availability for specialized radiographic exams in order to maximize room effectiveness. Prepares the exam room ensuring adequate aseptic and/or sterile supplies, contrast materials, catheters, safety equipment, positioning devices, linen and other required equipment are present. Ensures and maintains exam room and equipment in a clean and neat arrangement. Prepares and administers contrast material orally, rectally, or intravenously under close control of an authorized provider/radiologist and monitors the patient's vital signs and response to the examination. Performs all studies as dictated by the department's standardized protocol list. Notifies the ordering provider of significant changes in patient's medical/mental status. Ensures patient ID band and the request are identical as well as performing a two identifier check including patient's full name as well as full birth date to ensure the correct patient is identified prior to completing the ordered exam. Electronically processes exposed radiographs produced via DR and CR plate readers. Able to trouble shoot minor malfunctions and will bring any issues to the attention of the lead technologist or supervisor. Performs digital/technical manipulation of images, ensures proper exam markers are present, patient identification is accurate, proper positioning utilized in order to provide adequate and proper processing/ storing and transmission of images into PACS. Assists the radiologist and/or authorized provider in performing more complex imaging procedures such as Retrograde Urethrograms and other requested exams requiring authorized provider/radiologist presence. Performs bedside (portable) examinations on the inpatient floors, including ICU, OR, Urgent Care and SCR. Will perform C-Arm work when requested. Accurately edits, registers and completes patients in VISTA Imaging package. Adheres to policy and procedural changes affected by internal memos and directives form supervisory personnel. Interacts and assists imaging students/volunteers/job shadow students during various rotations throughout Imaging Services. Understands that imaging students, volunteers and job shadow students cannot perform direct patient care duties. Chooses inpatients/UC patients to be called to the department, coordinating a steady flow of inpatients/UC along with the unscheduled outpatients arriving throughout the day. Schedules add on patients and ensures all inpatients ordered for specific desired date are completed that day. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g.) b. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). This advanced ARRT position requires an an advanced certification. The advanced certification can include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.] c. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation). Grade Determinations: GS-9(a) Experience. At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.(b) Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments:1. Advanced DRT. Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex radiographic procedures. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):*a. Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures b. Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers; *c. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedures. d. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography; e. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions; and f. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. Ability to work alone and perform a variety of duties, changing one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure, and consistently meet department work schedule demands, including documentation and participation in workgroup, committees, etc. Ability to read printed material, gauges, computer monitor, and distinguish colors, such as color doppler or reading doctor's orders and visualizing the hue of patient's skin, wounds, etc. This position exposes the employee to constant noise and to limited ionizing radiation. The employee works in an area where ionizing radiation is utilized for patient care. Dosimeters are assigned to track occupational dose. Also works with patients that have potentially been dosed with a radio-isotope for Nuclear Medicine procedures. Proper training for PPE use and dosimeter monitoring are requirements of this position.
