About the Position: Serves as the Savannah District Industrial Hygienist and Industrial Hygiene Program Administrator. Independently plans and administers the Industrial Hygiene Program engaged in a range of light to moderately complex industrial processes, engineering design and construction activities involving potentially hazardous environmental working conditions.
Duties
Plan/Administer a comprehensive industrial hygiene program for a District operations engaged in military construction, civil works and Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste activities.
Conduct periodic surveys of working conditions to determine the nature and magnitude of hazardous exposures and the effectiveness of existing control measures.
Advise other agency activities on administrative and technical aspects of the occupational health program.
Coordinate with stake holders to develop control measures where hazard exposures are
discovered

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain the appropriate certification to drive a government vehicle.
- There are physical requirements associated with this position. Wearing of protective equipment, e.g., safety shoes, safety glasses, etc., are required on project sites. Other protective equipment, such as respirators may be periodically required.
- Employee must be willing and able to participate in the medical surveillance program and attend 40 hours of HAZWOPER, Asbestos and other IH certification training and updates

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist:
The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science;
OR
A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene;
OR
Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes implementing the hearing conservation, respiratory protection, asbestos, lead, ergonomic, hazard communication and other Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health programs for the District. Monitors all government and contractor work for compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration; Conducts periodic evaluations of working conditions to determine the nature and magnitude of hazardous exposures and the effectiveness of existing control measures, such as ventilation systems and other engineering controls, hearing protection and other personal protective equipment and clothing (PPE).
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
