The Information Receptionist position is located at a Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) facility. The purpose of the position is to receive and direct individuals who call or visit a facility in providing them with information concerning the organization, functions, activities and personnel of the organization.
Duties
Duties of the Information Receptionist include but are not limited to the following:
Provides information in person or on the telephone in response to inquiries concerning the identification, location, and general responsibilities of organization. Receives telephone calls from individuals who frequently do not know the medical facility organization nor the person with whom they need to speak. Routes such calls to the appropriate office or employee. Notifies employees to pickup telephone messages held by the receptionist.
Maintains the medical facility reception area, including up-to-date locator records, telephone directories, building floor-plans, organization pamphlets, and similar guides, records of visitors, inquiry tallies, directories of other government agencies that interface or otherwise work with the medical facility, local commercial transportation schedules, housing registers, and miscellaneous bulletin board items.Ensures the reception area is stocked with appropriate booklets, pamphlets, and brochures for public distribution.
Issues identification badges to visitors as applicable. Provides instructions on security regulations related to wearing of badges and showing of passes. Ensures visitor badges are retrieved at the end of visits. Obtains as evidence of appropriate identification; and explains security regulations on restrictions on packages and briefcases; applies specific instructions in the processing of other categories of visitors and issues special types of badges to special categories of individuals; arranges for escort service whererequired; refers unannounced visitors to officials in the organization; receives advance notices of meetings, conferences, etc.
Uses office automation equipment such as computers, modems, printers, copiers, and FAX machines and software. Composes routine requests, memoranda, and transmittal and acknowledgement letters. Stores and retrieves documents or files, inserts and deletes text, and transmits and receives electronic mail.

Qualifications

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
General Experience: You must have 6 months of general experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed 1 (one) year above high school in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite is creditable at grades GS-03 through GS-05 for all positions except Reporting Stenographer, GS-05.
OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of general experience and education beyond high school. Combination: Determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits as desk to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts, or delivering mail. Some occasional light lifting during and in support of outreach events may be required. Outreach events are sometimes scheduled after typical workday and on weekends. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
