This position is located within Maintenance Services, Justice Buildings Services, Facilities and Administrative Services Staff. The Justice Buildings Services is responsible for performing functions with respect to the operations, maintenance, repair, preservation, alteration, furnishing, equipment and custody of the Robert F. Kennedy, Main Justice Building (RFK).

The duties and responsibilities of a Utility Systems Repairer Operator generally include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assists with high-pressure steam stations.
Assists with checking all controls for safe operation.
Assists in major overhaul or repairs of plant equipment.
Basic understanding of the proper operation of heating equipment and basic auxiliary mechanisms.
Requirements
- You must be a United States Citizen or National.
- You will be required to complete a pre-employment security investigation and background check which includes a drug screening.
- You may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
- Selective Service registration is required for males born on or after 12/31/1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file.

- You may have to lift objects weighing from 20 to 50 pounds, and upon occasion, in excess of 50 pounds.
- This position is on a fixed shift, including weekends and holidays, to provide service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Works indoors in areas that usually have adequate light, heat, and fresh air, as well as outdoors in all kinds of weather.
- Standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling are required. Work may be performed in cramped or awkward positions.
- You are exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, shock, broken bones, and burns. Protective clothing and devices must be worn to minimize the potential for accidents.
Qualifications
To qualify for the position of Utility Systems Repairer-Operator Helper, (WG-4742-5), you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below AND possess the required specialized experience specific to the series and grade you are applying to.
QUALIFICATIONS:
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Utility Systems Repairer-Operator Helper without more than normal supervision: Hanging belts and bearings; Adjusting packing gland collars on valve, pumps, and other equipment; AND Selecting the tools and equipment needed for utility system repair and operations work. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Requirements: Standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling are required. Work may be performed in cramped or awkward position. Lift objects weighing from 20-50 pounds, and upon occasion, in excess of 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: Work both in and outdoors. Frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, dust, grease, heat, fumes, and noise. Work in bad weather, in mud or snow and in wet or icy areas. Subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, or bruises. Follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as ear protective devices, hard hats, and hard toed shoes.
