The purpose of this position is to serve as a Maintenance Worker in Facilities Management Services, at the Wichita, KS VA Medical Center in Wichita, KS. This position works in the Mechanical Unit under the general supervision of the Supervisor, Maintenance and Repair Section, and is responsible for learning trade practices value assisting in the performance of work connected with the maintenance and repair of utilities and plumbing.

Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Assists with the installation and maintenance of all types of Plumbing, assists with lays out for needed routing, placement, slant, slope and full of systems; determines the parts (pipes, elbows, valves, etc.) are the proper kind and size. Assists with tests and makes needed adjustments to systems and equipment after completing the work for proper operation, flow, drainage, and sanitary conditions. Cleans drains and operates sewer-cleaning equipment. Incumbent assists with the plumbing phase of the preventive maintenance program, making scheduled inspection of assigned mechanical, units, cleaning, lubricating, and making repairs and adjustments to assure proper operation. The incumbent performs duties of a mechanical nature in connection with the utilities system and assists with the repairs to steam supply systems and controls, heating, and cooling equipment. Assists with tests and adjustments to plumbing systems and equipment serving ale units for proper operation, flow, drainage, and sanitary conditions. Under journeyman supervision incumbent works on low pressure steam heating, low pressure radiator traps and valves. Work involves making the more simple and routine repairs of duties of a plumbing mechanic that can be accomplished by removing & cleaning. replacing, adjusting, and testing defective parts or equipment as well as assisting journeymen level craftsman in the completion of day-to-day work orders and assignments which include installation of new equipment and structures, maintenance repair of equipment and facilities and assisting in the preventive maintenance of, equipment. As knowledge and skills increase journeymen level tasks may accomplished under the direct supervision of the journeyman. To qualify for this position, you meet the following qualifications. Screen out element: Do you have the ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision? Related experience includes repairing mechanical equipment, assisting with the trades, (e.g., plumbing, electrical, carpentry) in carrying out their duties and assists with construction alteration, repairs, or modifications. AND PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Works from ladders, scaffolding and platforms and where the parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weight up to 40 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent is required to lift items in excess of 40 pounds. Work is carried out in tiring positions such as standing, crouching, stooping and kneeling as well as prone. Considerable manual manipulations are required, and physical strain is encountered in performing tedious repairs in bard to get to places. Muscular effort is expended in lifting, pulling, or pushing while putting on repairs or working on parts of heavy equipment. The work is done inside and outside and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. The incumbent ?is sometimes required to work outside in bad weather and in areas that are noisy. Incumbent OC08Sionally is exposed to the possibility of broken bones. electrical shock and bums. Incumbent-is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, and infections. Incumbent assists with tasks in steam tunnels, attics, crawl spaces and trenches where the incumbent is exposed to possible burns from hot water and steam, danger of falling from scaffolding or ladders. Fumes from refrigerants, gas, carbon dioxide, and dirty, greasy, and noisy wonk constitute a disagreeable and unavoidable element of the job.
