This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: The position is located at the Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command, Fleet Management Expansion (FMX), Fort Benning, GA. Fort Benning is located 100 miles south of Atlanta, GA, and adjacent to Columbus, GA and Phenix City, AL.
Duties
Service tactical, industrial, commercial, light combat, other support-type vehicles such as passenger cars, pickup trucks, buses, semi-trailer truck tractors, warehouse tractors, farm tractors, forklifts, vehicles and with similar characteristics.
Assemble, disassemble, repair, replace, recondition, and rebuild components of the various systems and makes independent judgments based on specifications in technical manuals and on accepted trade practices.
Conduct troubleshooting/repairing of major components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, trans-axles, electronic fuel injection systems, emission control systems, and related electrical, electronic, hydraulic, fuel, and other assemblies.
Provide technical guidance and assistance to lower graded employees, and inspect completed work performed by lower graded employees.
Tear down, adjust, repair, reassemble, and runs operational checks on components of these systems following instructions contained in technical manuals.
Maintain a safe and clean work environment by utilizing safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations for the assigned trade.
Use hand and power tools common to the occupation and a wide variety of specialized tools and test equipment.
Operate electronic test equipment such as computerized engine analyzers and scanners, exhaust analyzers, dynamometers, and oscilloscopes.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination to ensure the required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 40lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Automotive Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform common automotive mechanic duties. Perform automotive mechanic repair tasks. Perform troubleshooting in order to diagnose and repair automotive engines and vehicles used for commercial, industrial, or tactical purposes - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: Employee will often work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. Frequently required to stand for long periods of time, and to bend, stoop, crawl under vehicles, and make repairs in other tight spaces. Frequently must lift, handle, and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). Occasionally is required to move heavier items with assistance from other employees or with mechanical devices up to or over 23 kilograms (50 pounds)
Working Conditions: Work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. Occasionally performs work outside under adverse weather conditions. Continually exposed to dirt, dust, and grease. Exposed to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, and respirators. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations for the assigned trade. Maintains a safe and clean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing.
