Duties

Receive, dissemble, and inspect dental supplies, instruments and equipment. Determine the appropriate method for sterilizing dental equipment. Conduct periodic inventory of supplies, instruments and equipment. Operate ad adjust dental and radiographic equipment. Provide training, mentoring, and orientation to less experienced staff on dental sterilization techniques Monitor patients to detect signs of shock or reactions to treatment. Assemble surgical trays with instruments and material for dental procedures.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and certification sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA). Advanced certification (e.g., Advanced Life Support) does not supersede BLS completion.
  • Uniform will be required.
  • Must be certified as a radiographer and have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in 42 CFR part 75.
  • Ear protection may be required.
  • This position is Inclement Weather Essential. This means that you must be willing to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal government service that includes sterilizing and preparing a full range of medical or dental supplies and equipment used in a clinical setting OR assisting in general dental procedures such as providing chair side assistance to a dentist. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if you meet the definitions below: Education Substitution: Successfully completed a four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as Dental Assistant. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Dental Supply Inventory ManagementEquipment Preparation and MaintenanceTeaching Others Time in Grade Requirement: Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-5 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non temporary competitive appointment.
