About the Position: You will operate a variety of heavy equipment such as fronted loader, graders, backhoes, brush cutters, vacuum and magnetic sweepers, and bulldozer to clear brush and grade roads for fire trails and occasionally to move or cover flammable or hazardous materials, etc. Work is done on flat or rolling terrain, in forest areas, various terrain and soil and lava conditions such as upland areas, stumps, rocks, and target pits and controls facilities on firing ranges.

Duties

Perform routine operator maintenance on trucks and power tools. Drive vehicles with gross vehicle weight upward of 20,000 pounds, four driving wheels, and less than six forward speeds over streets and roads. Operate field-type tractors with attached or towed equipment to perform ground maintenance throughout the cantonment area and ranges. Assure that environmental, safety and housekeeping rules are followed. Perform duties related to ground maintenance, operating power tools such as chain saws and power hedgers. Operate heavy machinery such as graders, backhoes, brush cutters, bulldozer, and front-end bucket loader.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a current a valid state driver's license and any installation and/or DoD requirement for the type vehicle being operated.
• Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement.
• This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program. Must sign DA Form 5019 acknowledging both pre-appointment and periodic random drug testing requirements.
• Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
• Employee shall be required to pass and maintain forklift certification and must be able to obtain and maintain a forklift operator's certificate.
• Employee responds to emergency calls after normal work hours.
• May be required to complete occasional business travel.
• Employee will be subject to both planned and unplanned overtime.

Work is performed on large pieces of equipment, which require frequent adjustment. Often the terrain causes more adverse operating conditions than work on flat or rolling terrain. The constant vibration of the equipment and jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces causes considerable strain. Frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions due to location of the controls and attachments Working Conditions: Work is performed outside, in all types of weather, often in an open driver's seat or platform, on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces and forests. Operator is constantly exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning while working on rough and uneven terrain. Subject to noise, vibration, dust dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust. Protective devices such as but not limited to earplugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, hard hat and safety shoes is required. Long trousers or coveralls and shirt or tee shirt with sleeves are worn.
