This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform technical support to the heritage resources staff.

Duties

Prepares Cultural Resource Inventory reports and site forms. Enters site and inventory information into databases and onto GIS maps. Assists in the preparation of archeological and historical information to create interpretive materials for display and dissemination. Monitors archeological projects to ensure sufficiency of fieldwork. Conducts inventories of Forest cultural resources in areas of proposed Forest Service projects. Researches reference materials such as State and National Register files, historic documents, archeological reports, maps and aerial photos, and interviews source individuals concerning project areas. Performs a variety of computations and assessments of standard archeological data, such as entering archeological artifact and projects data in appropriate forms and databases. Produces site and survey maps. Transfers GPS data to a GIS Arc View program loaded in a computer to create a map. Conducts cultural resource surveys of areas designated for various projects. Records sites and monitors affected sites during these project activities. Ensures that archeology work assignments are carried out in safe, timely manner according to established standards and procedures. Reviews work in progress to see those standards for pre-field research, survey design, site recording, graphics, and final report are being met. Advises other employees on methods of cultural resource inventory and provides written instructions, research materials and supplies to all involved in planning and operation of natural resource activities. May serve as a crew work leader.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Provide course descriptions as necessary. GS-06: Applicants must have (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05 level. GS-06: There is no substitution of education for this position. Examples of specialized experience include: Work conducting cultural resource surveys of areas designated for ground-disrupting activities such as timber sale harvests or road building; Work performing a variety of computations and assessments of standard archeological data including completing archeological site forms and survey reports. Researching library and archival information such as State and National register files, historic documents, archeological reports, maps and photos regarding archeological project areas. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
