This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform various duties to accomplish preventive maintenance, repair, upkeep of building and grounds, and/or participates in trail construction and maintenance.

Duties

Measures and cuts materials to required lengths and dimensions. Installs structural and trim items by nailing, bolting, mortising, doweling, and gluing. Uses a variety of common hand and power tools, and basic assembly and fastening procedures. Prepares surfaces, cleans brushes and equipment. Mixes and thins paints, applies prime and finish coats to surfaces. Checks items processed for obvious flaws and apply necessary preservative to surface. Utilizes elementary knowledge of different skills and related tools of the trade to assist with repair to plumbing, drainage systems, roofs, carpentry projects, grounds and street repairs, flooring, and other miscellaneous tasks. Assists other workers with repairs to various facilities and grounds. Cleans working area upon completion of assignments, and removes waste materials from the area. Cleans and cares for tools and equipment. Performs grounds maintenance and landscaping duties such as mowing, edging, leaf collection and snow removal. Operates motor vehicles in performance of assigned duties. Loads and unloads materials and equipment. Performs vehicle maintenance in accordance with established instructions, rules and regulations. Cleans working area upon completion of assignments, and removes waste materials from the area. Cleans and cares for tools and equipment. Performs a full range of custodial duties in office spaces, public restrooms and visitor use areas. Removes trash and recyclables. Replaces supplies as required. Keeps a stock of cleaning materials, restroom supplies, and equipment needed and informs supervisor when more materials are needed and when equipment is in need of repair. Adjusts, oils, and changes buffers, brushes, rollers, and other attachments on machines used. Uses cement, asphalt, and other surfacing's and emulsions in constructing tread surfaces, walls, curbs, and other features. Uses ladders and scaffolds when necessary to replace ceiling fixtures, light bulbs/tubes throughout buildings ensuring items are turned-in according to environmental regulations. Constructs and maintains a variety of trails ranging from primitive native surfaced trails to highly developed paved trails. Assists in the construction of major engineered features, such as bridges, raised trail ways, or small buildings. Builds or repairs trail structures requiring dry masonry (no cement) rockwork techniques, such as rock retaining walls, rip-rap steps, bridge abutments, barriers, causeways, water bars, check dams, and others. Performs basic carpentry work in maintaining or constructing handrails, curbs, bridge beams and decking, and other wood structures. With guidance, uses anchors, harnesses, cables, rope, chains, and various winches for such rigging work. Uses native materials, such as rocks and logs, or imported materials such as dimensioned lumber, steel, concrete, or asphalt in constructing various features on trails. Uses and maintains primitive had tools, including but not limited to: crosscut saws, pry bars, axes, Pulaski's, McLeod's, star drills or other hand rock drills, hand-powered winches, and various digging and brushing tools. Uses and maintains a variety of power tools, such as chainsaws, gasoline powered rock drills, jackhammers, power winches, and light power hand tools such as rotary saws and drills. Assists in the erection and use of rigging and high lines for lifting, pulling and transporting heavy materials and equipment over rugged terrain or across wide spans and gorges. Assists in blasting operations, by serving as a guard, helping to carry and prepare explosives for loading, and helping to assemble initiation equipment under direction of the Blaster in Charge. Assists in preparing loads and packing animals for delivering supplies or transporting project materials under the direction of an Animal Packer.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
