This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform responsible for performing recreation and timber technical work.

Duties

Ensures recreation sites and areas with one or two major uses are operated and maintained in accordance with operation and maintenance plans. Performs safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and takes or recommends corrective action. Schedules daily activities, establishes maintenance schedules, and inspects cleanup operations based on recreation operation and maintenance plans. Cleans both roadside and backcountry dispersed sites. Reports on conditions and use of sites and areas. Serves as inspector for recreation area cleanup and maintenance contracts. Maintains contact with and provides support to Campground Host(s). Serves as a unit fee collection officer. Inspects recreation areas and areas of concentrated public use for compliance with the management plans and public health and safety requirements. Naturalizes sites where necessary in order to control use and prevent resource damage. Installs and maintains information boards, travel signs, regulatory signs, and other signs associated with recreation sites, travel management, and safety. Provides detailed information about recreation opportunities to Forest visitors and explains the Forest Service rules and regulations. Provides information on resource management practices, regulations, and current conditions. Collects, compiles, and summarizes information for recreation data management systems. Provides input for programming and planning. Oversees the construction and maintenance of trails. Monitors the condition and use of trails. Independently applies silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber. Brings to the attention of responsible individuals situations on the ground that are inconsistent with guidelines. Acts as a certified timber cruiser. Independently applies the instructions issued in a cruise plan. Takes and records tree measurements, assesses quality, and determines defect. Prepares and computer processes cruise data. Observes and reports areas of possible archeological significance and sightings of sensitive, threatened, or endangered wildlife species. Traverses harvest unit boundaries snf road locations, and determines area. May perform law enforcement responsibilities using all-terrain-vehicles (ATVs), watercraft, and snowmobiles to patrol unit roads, trails, or waterways ensuring position of forest property and visitors. Participates in other aspects of resource management support work such as recreation, maintenance, silviculture, tree planting, etc. Takes appropriate action to enforce Federal Regulations and to protect life and property. Coordinates enforcement activities with local Forest Service law enforcement personnel.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards. GS-05: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level; OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable); OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Examples of specialized experience include: Inspected recreation area clean-up operations and performed safety hazard analysis of public recreation use areas, performed site maintenance, including cleanup and naturalizing at widely dispersed sites; gathered, compiled, and reported recreation program data for use in monitoring and assessment activities and summarized data for use in recreation data management systems. Performed crew based forestry related support work such as selecting and marking individual trees for harvest using well defined marking guidelines, silviculture prescriptions, and specific instruction and/or assisting in the measurement of limiting distances, tree diameter, tree height, estimation of defect and quality, and related fundamental timber cruising procedures. Selective Placement Factors This position may serve as a Forest Protection Officer, and as such, candidates must complete a background investigation to check for criminal history. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
