Job Corps graduates are encouraged to apply. This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of work in support of the unit's wilderness program.

Duties

Assures wilderness work projects are completed safely and utilizes minimal tool concept. Assures wilderness areas and trails are maintained to established trail standards. Assists in re-establishment of native plants at denuded campsites and abandoned trails by preparing the soil for revegetation, transporting plants to the site and protecting the site after revegetation takes place. Implements current NEPA and Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC) processes. Processes and interprets historical and cultural values specific to wilderness areas. Works with other agencies, interest groups, and partnerships to accomplish wilderness tasks and studies. Explains established rules and regulations to wilderness campers and can implement wilderness fire suppression techniques. Directs or leads one or two lower grade employees engaged in trail maintenance and wilderness contacts. Interacts with a variety of user groups such as backpackers, stock users, fisheries, floaters, rafters, airplane folks, commercial river and hunting outfitters. Makes safety checks of wilderness camp areas, outfitter areas and records data for corrective action. Inspects assigned areas to determine compliance with regulations or specifications. Contacts user groups to provide wilderness philosophy, regulations, and current camp or fire restrictions. Provides standard information on resource management and stock use practices in wilderness areas. Checks for compliance with regulations issues notices for common violations and reports other violations to supervisor. Collects monies for sale of maps. Issues campfire permits. Inventories signs and check for accuracy and maintenance level. Gathers specific data on wilderness conditions. Educates user groups on "Leave No Trace" camping techniques and packing out garbage. Responsible for curtailing the improper management of human waste and educating people on importance of campsites placed away from water sources. Under the guidance of higher-graded technician, participates on patrols of off-trail regions that include technical mountaineering routes where ability to travel on snow, glaciers, steep rock, and mountainous terrain is a frequent activity. Patrols are conducted for the purpose of current route and mountain familiarization, and to increase interaction with independent and guided climbers while monitoring guide services. Documents resource issues and impacts, and monitors public use of climbing routes and cross-country areas for the purposes of resource protection and wilderness management. A high level of physical fitness is required to perform these duties.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Provide course descriptions as necessary. GS-04: Applicants must have six months of general experience AND six months of specialized experience that is directly related to the work of the position OR successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable) OR an appropriate combination of experience and education above high school as described above. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university and include courses that are related to the occupation of the position. Examples of General Experience includes: Performed farm/ranch labor, such as feeding/tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities and/or worked in a greenhouse, nursery or landscaping e.g., planting, moving, watering, and tending plants and/or animal caretaker in a laboratory, zoo or pet store and/or volunteer work at a park, hospital, community sports league, local fire department, etc. Examples of specialized experience include: Trail maintenance/construction, constructing trail tread, or related tasks; assisted in keeping records on campsite inventory and condition surveys and/or prepared reports to compute, compile, and present data; inspected and cleaned areas, such as campsites and recreational areas, checked compliance with rules/regulations, restored stock impacted areas, and monitored visitor use; performed support such as forestry, range, or park technician, wild land firefighter, etc. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
