This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical support to the heritage resources staff.

Duties

Assists in performing procedural archeological fieldwork assignments using compass, topographical map, and aerial photographs, and/or GPS unit to conduct archeological surveys and to record site locations. Searches areas for surface historic and prehistoric archaeological remains and artifacts. Assists with determining the exact locations of sites and marks them on maps and/or aerial photographs and plots with GPS units. Assists in recording information on archeological site survey forms and prepares simple reports and field notes. Assists with the cleaning and cataloging of artifacts recovered from inventories and excavations. Assists in site testing and excavation. Applies coding information and/or labels to artifacts, slides, photographs, datasets, and narrative information to ensure that their relationships are cataloged and maintained.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards. Your application and resume must clearly show that you possess the experience requirements. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Provide course descriptions as necessary. GS-04: Applicants must have (6) six months of general experience AND (6) six months of specialized experience OR Successful completion of 2 years above high school with course work directly related to the position. OR A combination of education and experience listed above. Examples of General Experience includes: Working on a landscape or construction crew or other outdoor environment. Performing general office duties, such as completing, filing and maintaining simple records. Working and performing other general labor in an outdoor environment. Any work experience paid or unpaid in a related activity. Unpaid experience, for example, may be regular volunteer work, such as at a park, hospital, community sports league, etc. Examples of specialized experience include: Assisting in simple archaeological surveys and recording archeological sites and survey findings on standard forms. Clearing ground cover using hand tools and assisting in excavation in the performance of archeological survey and/or archaeological excavation work. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
