This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is responsible for providing classroom instruction to students in a variety of academic subjects.

Duties

Through classroom instruction and guidance, the incumbent establishes a learning environment in which students can develop their ability to make rational and informed decisions relevant to their needs. Promote opportunities for students to develop rapport, interrelationships, self-discipline, and a positive self-image. The incumbent instructs students in the following areas: reading, language, writing, mathematics, life skills, computer literacy, general educational development program, human development, and social studies. Incumbent is responsible for planning courses of instruction and lesson plans based on the developmental program and general curriculum guidelines in effect. The incumbent studies, plans, organizes, develops, and implements the assigned subjects independently using the Job Corps manual and center operating procedures as a guide. Develops individual classroom operating procedures and specific directives for classroom maintenance in conjunction with Job Corps regulations. Implements plan using teaching methods and techniques appropriate for the skill level being taught, allowing for adaptations to permit individual differences in interests and ability and improve the quality of instruction. Continuously evaluates individual academic progress through the use of criterion-references, tests and/or other relevant evaluative methods/instruments. Maintains required records in accordance with applicable regulations, which includes progress reports and accountability reports. Provides constructive criticism, advice and guidance to students in the appropriate manner. Issues or problems that arise with individual students are dealt with in conjunction with the supervisor, student, and other officials if required. All severe or unusual disciplinary matters are referred to the Supervisor. Acts as a member of a team approach system. As such, attends scheduled meetings of the department as an educational representative which gathers and presents education ratings. Participates in educational activities, such as professional workshops, to improve teaching skills in order to provide better services to the students. Plans, schedules, and organizes field trips closely related to topic(s) studied in class, which may require the incumbent to operate a Government-owned or leased vehicle. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • This position requires the incumbent to assist students, peers, and subordinates in understanding the relevance of, and promotes the development of positive social skills among students.
  • This position requires the incumbent to assist students, peers, and subordinates through modeling appropriate behavior, positive intervention, and positively intervening and teaching appropriate employability skills for workplace success.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Provide course descriptions as necessary. Basic Requirements: Bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution that included or was supplemented by supervised student teaching, and at least one course in each of the following areas: general psychology, human development, history and/or philosophy of education, and teaching methods at the learning level of the position to be filled, i.e., elementary or secondary learning level. For secondary school teaching positions, applicants must also have had at least 24 semester hours (or equivalent) of course work in each of the principal fields of instruction. -OR- Combination of education and experience - Applicants who have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree but who do not meet the specific course requirements shown above meet minimum qualification requirements if they have completed at least one full academic year of professional teaching experience at the elementary or secondary school level as appropriate to the position to be filled. Professional teaching experience is defined as full and primary responsibility for the instruction of assigned students under general supervision in a recognized or accredited school or other accredited educational institution. This includes responsibility for preparation and presentation of lessons and the evaluation of students' progress throughout the learning period, including a determination of the student's success or failure according to established criteria. -OR- Teacher certification or licensure in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Note: For special education teaching positions, applicants must meet the degree and course requirements shown in paragraph A above, and, in addition, must have had at least 24 semester hours (or the equivalent) of course work in special education that included at least one course covering the teaching of exceptional students and courses in the appropriate field(s) of specialization. In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts shown below: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as: Teaching subjects such as reading, language, writing, mathematics, life skills, computer literacy, general educational development program, human development, and social studies. Assisted in creating a teaching environment that provided and promoted opportunities for students to develop rapport, interrelationships, self-discipline, and a positive self-image. Experience in developing teaching learning plans and activities, including adapting instructional materials and methods. -OR- Successful completion of 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or masters or equivalent graduate degree. -OR- A combination of education and experience listed above. Selective Placement Factors: This position requires the incumbent to assist students, peers, and subordinates in understanding the relevance of, and promotes the development of positive social skills among students through modeling appropriate behavior, positive intervention, and positively intervening and teaching appropriate employability skills for workplace success. Incumbent must possess or obtain all applicable state and/or national Teaching licensure and/or certifications. Incumbent must possess valid State Driver's License. This is a testing designated position which requires a negative test result for illegal drug use prior to appointment and randomly thereafter. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
