Duties

Install historic roofing materials such as metal, asphalt shingle, and rolled asphalt. Repair or replace historic windows sashes and hardware. Perform preservation work on historic ruins and buildings dating from the 19th & 20th Century. Interpret and implement the use of Federal guidelines such as the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Use of rulers, tape measures, squares and levels to perform carpentry duties. Follow oral and written instructions for projects and carry out the work with little supervisory check during progress. Use carpentry tools and techniques of the 19th and 20th century. Identify and select paint, stains, and preservatives for projects. Fort Bowie National Historic Site is located 14 miles south of the town of Bowie in southeastern Arizona. Fort Bowie is a very remote site; the closest medical facilities, churches, and limited shopping can be found in Willcox which is 38 miles away. All amenities including an international airport are available in Tucson, approximately 135 miles from Fort Bowie. Elevations at Fort Bowie range from 4,550 to 5,250 feet and temperatures ranger from below freezing in the winter to over 90 degrees (F) in the summer. Qualifications

This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. Selectee will be placed in a pay status and can expect to work a minimum of 25 pay periods not to exceed a maximum of 26 pay periods. Selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status from approximately 7/14 to 7/27 unless other work exists that can be assigned to you during this period. Though my non-pay time may be reduced, I will still be placed in non-pay status for a minimum of 1 pay period in accordance with NPS policy. Additional work must be in concurrence with applicable regulations and policies. To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Preservationist without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: (1) repairing or replacing lime-plaster shelter coats on adobe structures; (2) completing preservation, stabilization, restoration, and maintenance of historic and non-historic structures; (3) performing roofing, painting, masonry and carpentry work; (4) utilizing hand and power tools which include: hammers, saws, wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, drills, tape measures, squares, chisels, drawknives, calipers, and traditional carpentry tools. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position. Physical Effort: The incumbent performs work at construction sites. There is considerable physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of various sizes, weights, and shapes. There is considerable standing, stooping, lifting, and bending. Because of the multi-faceted craft aspects of this or in a stretched, cramped, or awkward position. Fieldwork magnifies the physical effort required to perform the duties of this position and reflect actual restoration project environments. Incumbent is required to perform craftsman work in the investigation of historic structures and in working with other employees in restoration techniques. Inspections may require working in cramped, close quarters underneath structures or on rooftops several hundred feet above ground level. The incumbent occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds or more. Backcountry work may require the incumbent to hike or ride by horseback to the job site in remote locations over rough terrain. Work Environment: Work is performed throughout the park, where the incumbent is subject to cuts from hand or power tools and danger from flying splinters or chips. In the shop the incumbent is exposed to noise and sawdust in the air. The presence of lead paint on historic fabric may require special knowledge and handling and the use of protective equipment in the shop or at the job site and require special attention and the use of safety equipment. Work is both inside and outside, in all types of weather. The incumbent must work at elevations from sea level to above 4,000 feet. Temperatures vary from -20 to 90+ degrees. Winter snow depths may vary from two to six feet with icy driving conditions involved. The incumbent may be exposed to snow and ice conditions in winter and rain and wind in summer. Must have and maintain a valid state driver's license. Work is performed in all types of weather, both indoors and outdoors. Considering the nature of historic structures and the unknown structural characteristics, field inspections may contain some hazardous conditions (e.g., asbestos, PCBs).

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
