About the Position: This position is a Health Physicist for the US Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, with a duty location in Vandergrift, PA.
Duties
Independently plans, organizes, and conducts or directs radiation survey of other health physicists, including junior health physicists, within the SLDA site including field measurements, wipe tests, and sending samples for laboratory analyses.
Serve as technical expert in the comprehensive practice of health physics, to include environmental remediation and nuclear material control (special nuclear material), and provide technical direction and/or advice to professionals.
Provides technical direction and/or advice to project professionals.
Review and study proposals and plans of radiation protection related documents.
Review and investigate innovative solutions to complex problems that arise on site and whose solutions have programmatic impacts to Buffalo District and National FUSRAP execution.
Coordinate health physics activities at the SLDA site and independently assembles, evaluates, and presents technical information to a variety of audiences including internal and external stakeholders.
Serve as the on-site health physicist at the Shallow Land Disposal Area (SLDA) Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) project for the Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District (LRB).

- The position requires physical presence at a duty location site contaminated with beryllium. Incumbent is required to demonstrate they are not sensitized to beryllium; a Beryllium Lymphocyte Proliferation test (BeLPT) is required every 6 months.

In order to qualify, you must meet the following requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Health Physicist:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education.
OR
C. Certification: Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes advanced principles, concepts, and techniques to detect and measure radiation and in the human body and in the environment; application of radiation related elements of the physical sciences; mathematical calculations for radiation exposure in relation to established radiation standards; and planning, implementing, and operating a radiological protection program; performing non-destructive assay of radioactive materials using gamma spectroscopy, or other methods; applies health physics involving special nuclear material; managing, packaging, manifesting and shipping wastes containing DOT Class 7 and hazardous material; independently assembling, evaluating, and presenting technical information to a variety of audiences including internal and external stakeholders; experience as the radiation safety officer or experience directly working under a RSO for a broad scope license; implementing the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation (MARSSIM) process and knowledge of its application in environmental remediation projects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).
