Duties

You will perform repairs and maintenance work on various types of heavy mobile equipment such as: graders, loaders, backhoes, crawlers, refuse removal, marine, fire trucks, welders, sweepers, weight handling, compressors, etc. You will perform basic troubleshooting, removing, adjusting, repairing or replacing defective components, and complex operating mechanisms such as engines, transmissions, drive lines, ignition, emission, injection, and hydraulic power systems. You will assist higher level mobile equipment mechanics in disassembling and repairing major systems, components, and complex operating machines. You will read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints, and maintenance manuals and specifications. You will determine malfunctions, best repair methods, and repair or modify faulty components in various sub-systems.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to perform the work of a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT REPAIRER without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by: 1) Assisting in maintaining, repairing, and modifying a variety of heavy mobile/weight handling equipment; 2) Assisting with repairing/overhauling at least one type of major system (e.g. hammerheads, mobile cranes, crane tracks, lift bridge hoists); and 3) Assisting in the use of test procedures and equipment in tracing hard-to-locate problems.
