Duties
This position is authorized to provide the right candidate with a sign-on bonus, and pay up to $200,000 toward education costs!! In addition, salary can go above the maximum amount shown if candidate meets annual performance metrics.

The Staff Podiatrist - Surgical at the Wilmington VA Health System will evaluate, diagnose and treat various foot and ankle pathologies with conservative (medical), surgical, and therapeutic modalities as the medical condition may require. They will serve as an integral part of the Podiatry Section which reports to the Chief of Podiatry. The Podiatry Section is within the Department of Surgery. Wilmington VA Health System comprises 5 CBOCs (Community Based Outpatient Clinics) and a Main Campus Hospital. In the Podiatry Section, there are 6 LPNs who assist 5 Podiatric Providers. The Staff Podiatrist will mostly provide services to our Veterans at the Main Campus. S/he will perform in-patient and outpatient medical and surgical care; Wound Clinic patient care; Emergency Room patient care as needed; and provide services for CLC (Community Living Center) patients when needed.
Duties:
Independently perform clinical duties and surgical procedures
Conduct training of residents and medical students
Assess Veterans' risks and benefits for each surgical case prior to its performance and provide pre-operative and post-operative instructions to patients both verbally and in writing
Obtain appropriate informed patient consent prior to surgical cases, and follow all hospital pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative procedures and protocols
Responsible for performing history and physical evaluations for surgical patients; ordering appropriate labs, x-rays, medications, etc., before and after surgery; and co-admission of podiatric patients to the hospital as needed
Respond to Veterans' communications in an appropriate timeframe per VA protocol
Provide professional advice and consultation in care areas related to treatment of podiatric conditions
Manage inpatient and outpatient consults; Wound Care consults; ER consults; and CLC consults as assigned
Effectively provide on-site supervision of the medical assistants/LPNs in conjunction with the Chief of Podiatry who provides global supervision
Assist the Chief of Podiatry in assessing qualifications of prospective employees
Exhibit professional acumen at all times with internal and external staff and contractors; and with patients
Create appropriate professional, Interpersonal relationships; utilize the skills of conflict resolution easily and effectively; and demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with other physicians, other healthcare providers, and other staff from a wide array of clinical services, specialties and departments
Appropriately assess, diagnose and treat medical and surgical disorders using the most appropriate techniques in providing quality health care
Perform a wide variety of complex (reconstructive, rearfoot, midfoot, ankle, forefoot) and non-complex podiatric surgical procedures
Perform other related duties as needed.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8am to 430pm. Call rotation will be required with other Podiatrists.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Podiatrist Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted.
Residency Training: Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are:
Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed
OR
Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.
Licensure: Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Experience: The individual must qualify to perform duties as a Podiatrist, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff Podiatrists may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of Podiatry.
Staff Podiatrist - Surgical: Should be board qualified or board certified by a Council on Podiatric Medical Education certification board, or other equivalent certification to grant surgical privileges. The individual must possess experience to perform duties as a podiatrist and surgeon, and have completed an accredited residency, and/or possess experience to perform general and surgical duties and some specialized functions and procedures, without supervision. Staff podiatrist surgeons also includes attending physicians who train podiatrist residents, assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine. These podiatrists will perform office based procedures and operating room procedures and are responsible for surgical patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Added work responsibilities may include seeing hospital patients daily and carrying a pager or be available by phone for emergency consultations.

Physical Requirements: Physical demands include repetitive body movements including the following: frequent reaching, standing, walking, and lifting of equipment and/or patients to provide patient care. This position requires extension of the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction including above or below shoulder level, during the provision of patient care, including retrieval of needed equipment, supplies and to make contact with the patient.
