This Medical Instrument Technician (EKG) position at the Boston VA Healthcare Systems. This position is a full-time at 40 hours per week.

Duties

The Full Time Medical Instrument Technician's (EKG) main duties will be to manage the MUSE system, for which all ECG/Holter/ETT data is stored; and will be trained in the appropriate duties to accomplish this task in a timely manner. The Technician is responsible for collating accurately and distributing ECGs to the Cardiologist assigned to read for the day; editing the interpreted EKGs and completing requests and encounters for all EKGs acquired within VA BHS and Bedford. Technician shares in the responsibility with other technicians in the Heart Station of completing requests by attaching results, scheduling and receiving requests as appropriate. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Incumbent must be able to type proficiently since the majority of his/her duties are completed using a keyboard and attention to detail is required because EKGs are part of the patient's electronic medical record. In addition to managing the MUSE system, the technician will be required to acquire EKGs during early evening hours as well as registering and applying various ambulatory cardiac monitors. The Incumbent must have two years of comparable clerical functional duties in a medical setting at the next lower level and in addition, will be trained to acquire EKG's, with correct lead placement and skin preparation; entering patient information as required and correcting information on ECGs as needed and will be trained to complete ECG consult requests in regards to receiving, scheduling, and cancelling with the appropriate comments, and attaching ECG results to the complete the request. The incumbent will be trained on how to review the Scheduled Operation List and follow established protocol on acquiring pre-op ECGs. Technician will be trained in Holter application and uploading data into the MARS system, as well as application of 14 day and 30 day monitors and entering the registration for each new patient requiring the particular monitor. Medical Instrument Technicians at the GS 6 level must have performed the administrative duties in a medical setting for two years at the next lower level comparable to the functions of this position and have one year of experiencing acquiring EKGs and applying cardiac outpatient monitors with minimal supervision. The technician functions independently in carrying out these standardized procedures of limited complexity. Deviations from regular procedures, unanticipated problems, and unfamiliar situations are referred to the supervisor for a decision or advice. Some assignments at this level may include developmental duties involving more complex procedures designed to prepare the technician for promotion to higher grades in a functional area. Such duties would be performed under close supervision. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM or 6:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a. Electrocardiograph Technicians (EKG) operate instruments used to record electrocardiograms, exercise tolerance tests, 24-48 heart monitoring and scanning, and pacemaker evaluations. Certification is offered by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT). Grade DeterminationsGS-6 Level Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to recognize special patient needs such as disabilities, impaired mobility, and complicating medical conditions in order to prepare and position the patient for the prescribed procedure. Knowledge of the specialized equipment and accessories appropriate to Holter monitoring and ability to perform such tests. Knowledge of universal precautions and sterilization techniques and ability to follow CDC guidelines in cleaning equipment. Ability to monitor the patient for adverse reactions and take appropriate action. Ability to operate the equipment to perform standard and routine highly specialized procedures including exercise stress testing. Certification: No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification GS-7 Level Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Knowledge of typical patient reactions and signs of distress including the ability to recognize, report and treat potentially lethal arrhythmias. Knowledge of common equipment settings and standardized procedures plus knowledge of common errors and corrective measures. Ability to modify procedures/positions to obtain the correct results with patients with complicating conditions such as amputations, Parkinson's disease, structural defects, and scar tissue. Ability to act as a mentor or preceptor to lower graded technicians. Ability to conduct in-service training on the EKG equipment and related instrumentation Certification: No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification References: VHA 5005, Appendix G27, Medical Instrument Technician - Electrocardiograph (EKG) Qualification Standard. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7.The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-06 to GS-07.
