The Deputy Chief EM/EOH will perform critical administrative, educational, and clinical duties to assist the ACOS EM/EOH in his/her responsibility to provide oversight for these programs at the Louisville VA Medical Center. The Deputy Chief EM/EOH position requires experience in clinical Emergency Medicine as well as leadership to effectively execute the numerous, complex oversight responsibilities required for clinical service chiefs at the Louisville VA Medical Center.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The Deputy Chief EM/EOH should be an experienced physician who is board certified or board eligible in Emergency Medicine and be motivated to learn the policies and procedures associated with the VA mission. The Deputy Chief EM/EOH should possess excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills to interact effectively with internal and external customers in sometimes challenging situations. The ideal candidate is also experienced in the administration of a clinical service and has experience with fiscal management of a service within VA. Prior experience as a service chief or acting service chief (or equivalent leadership position) is desirable. The Deputy Chief EM/EOH should be qualified to represent and serve as the acting ACOS/EM if the ACOS/EM is on leave, unavailable, or vacates the position.
Practices Medicine - The Deputy Chief EM/EOH is expected to spend approximately 70% FTE devoted to the practice of medicine. This amount may be less when the Deputy is acting as the ACOS EM/EOH. The Deputy Chief EM/EOH must qualify to be fully credentialed and privileged in their trained discipline of medicine and must be qualified to supervise healthcare professionals and trainees in this discipline. As such, the DC EM/EOH is expected to comply with all agency regulations, medical staff bylaws, facility policies, Joint Commission standards, and other regulations. The clinical component may include performing procedures, conducting diagnostic evaluations, managing medications, requesting consultations, and supervising trainees and other staff. Given the collateral nature of the Deputy Chief EM/EOH role, the Deputy will report to his/her clinical chain of command with the ACOS EM/EOH contributing to performance assessments.
Emergency Medicine physicians assess, evaluate, stabilize, and provide initial treatment to patients who present to the Emergency Department with a wide variety of illness, injury, medical or mental health conditions, or related symptoms. An Emergency Physician is trained to provide clinical care and/or perform medical procedures within their scope of practice to address minor illnesses or injuries as well as provide stabilizing treatment to patients presenting with major illnesses or injuries. He/she will assess all patients to determine if more definitive services are necessary and will complete medical screening exams for all patients. Emergency Medicine physicians do not provide long-term definitive care for patients and do not continue inpatient clinical care. Emergency Medicine Physicians are currently the Code Blue team and Code Airway team leaders.
Physicians will also function as collaborative physician for a nurse practitioner or physician assistant, when indicated, as assigned by Emergency Medicine Service. Emergency Medicine Physicians evaluate and treat patients during face-to-face ED/ ED Fast Track encounters and may assess patients through VA virtual care (Telephone, WC) encounters. EM physicians consistently communicates and treats customers, (Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. The physician will provide these customers with consistent information according to established policies and procedures and will handle conflicts and problems when dealing with customers constructively and appropriately.

EDRP Position Information: This position may be eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program within VHA. Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
[(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
(3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Additional Requirement: Must be Emergency Medicine Board certified.
Preferred Experience: BC/BE Internal Medicine/Family Medicine with recent substantial experience in provision of Emergency Medicine care (recent practice of the full range of ED procedures and practices) within the last 2 years, or recent graduation from a training program in Emergency Medicine will be considered. Eligibility for a clinical appointment to the University of Tennessee of Medicine faculty in Emergency Medicine for future involvement of the Memphis VA Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine with teaching emergency medicine residents as per GME guidelines. A current BLS and ACLS certification.

Education
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
- Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
- Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
- For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
