About the Position: This position is located at the Operations & Maintenance Department Public Works, Joint Base Myer - Henderson Hall, Virginia.
Joint Base Myer is a 15 minute commute to/from the Arlington National Cemetery Metro Station, a 10-15 minute commute to/from the Rosslyn, Virginia Metro Station, and is accessible by bus transportation. The installation is approximately 7 miles from Washington D.C. and a short distance from major roadways and express highways.
Duties
Perform a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures and utilities.
Estimate time and materials required for repairs or refers to appropriate shop for action.
Maintain records of buildings inspected, work accomplished and materials used.
Make visual examinations and operational tests to determine the need for and performance of repair work.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination.
- This position has heavy lifting requirements up to 100 lbs.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain, maintain and retain a valid government vehicle operator's license.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I am skilled in performing variety of trades or craft duties involving the maintenance, repair and improvement of building, structures and related fixtures and utilities. Paints surfaces, interiors and exteriors of buildings, and mobile equipment. Clears difficult stoppages in drain pipes, assembles pipe sections and fittings. Replaces burned out light bulbs and fuses. Replaces glass of various size, shape, and type. Loads and unloads materials and equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Efforts - Repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms in sometimes hard-to-reach places. Work requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and other uncomfortable positions. Incumbent must frequently handle, lift, carry and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 100 pounds, and occasionally over 100 pounds.
Working Conditions - Work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty and greasy. Bad-smelling fumes are often present in areas where repairs and installations are made. Frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. Occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. To reduce the dangers and irritations from exposure to harmful substances and conditions the employee follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, face masks, goggles, and protective clothing.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
