The Security Assistant position is located in the Police Service, VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS). The primary purpose of this position is to dispatch appropriate law enforcement and emergency services to incident and monitor physical security equipment.

Duties

Final cut-off for application will be September 8, 2023.*This job announcement will close when we have filled all the vacancies which may be sooner than the closing date.* Duties include, but are not limited to: Perform alarm and access monitoring, trace access patterns, and assign or remove user permissions. Open and secure doors remotely during routine and emergency operations. Assess on-scene behavior and determine when it is appropriate to dispatch law enforcement or other personnel to investigate. Respond to alarm systems monitoring fire, access, intrusion, duress/panic, medical emergencies, psychiatric emergencies, medical assist teams, etc. Perform system checks on a variety of equipment used in the dispatch center. Operate a variety of communications and security equipment, such as computers, multi-frequency radios, multi-line telephone system, and other related peripherals. Maintain accurate key inventory and accountability database. Utilize an electronic system to complete vehicle registration tasks and issue decals and permits as authorized by policy. Monitor and receive routine and emergency calls from a variety of sources that need police, fire, medical or other emergency services. Maintain contact with law enforcement units on assignment. Monitor and direct responses to security and life safety communications, radio dispatches, telephone calls, and other emergency communication circuits. Compile and prepare reports related to events occurring in the operation of the police control center. Perform and document emergency callbacks when necessary. Operate an established vehicle registration and visitor management program. Maintain accountability of police officer badges issued and all associated logs. Coordinate with various federal, state and local law enforcement officials for coordination of emergency situations. Conduct equipment inventories and completes records and other logs. Enter, update, and retrieve information from a variety of computer systems and sensitive databases. Utilize state and national systems to access law enforcement information to support field operations and investigations. Query for items such as criminal histories, arrest warrants, drivers record, vehicle registration, stolen property, firearms, etc. Work Schedule: Tour of Duty is based on the service line needs. This may include: 10 or 12 hour compressed schedules which include nights, weekends and holidays. May have to work an occasional 8 hour shifts to accommodate training requirements. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/08/2023. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-4 grade level or the equivalent in the private sector. Specialized experience is defined as: knowledge of security or law enforcement objectives and programs; carrying out support tasks related to law enforcement and security administration; monitoring and responding to physical alarm systems and security cameras; dispatching officers; monitoring computers for video surveillance; and maintaining reports and logs. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed four (4) years above high school in any field. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. (Transcripts must be submitted with application.). OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond an associate degree. For the GS-05, only education in excess of 60 semester hours (2 years) is creditable. If you qualify by a combination, your experience must be detailed in your resume and transcripts are required. (Transcripts must be submitted with application.) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work is typically sedentary in nature. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Working on off-tours, rotating shifts or regular overtime may be required.
