This position is located in Alaska Regional Office, in the Cultural Resources Division. This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. Government housing is not available.

Duties

This position is located in Anchorage, AK at the Alaska Regional Office as part of the cultural resources museum program team. The position will support a multi-year effort to ensure park museum collections meet collecting parameters set forth in park Scope of Collection Statements. Primary responsibilities will include working with parks to review collection holdings, write deaccession plans, and assist parks with initiating appropriate disposal of objects and collections no longer within scope. Serve as a staff curator for the NPS Alaska Region and is responsible for managing and providing oversight of a region-wide collections refinement project. Apply knowledge of applicable federal laws, policies, and definitions to determine appropriate management actions for NPS museum collections, including their care and disposition. Conduct collections research evaluates collections against park Scope of Collection Statements and provides recommendations for additions to or deaccessions from the collection to park Collection Advisory Committees. Complete museum registration documentation, to include accessioning, deaccessioning, and cataloging. The individual selected for this position must have a deep understanding of museum registration principles and be practiced in preparing documentation related to the acquisition, deaccession, and disposal of museum property. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/24/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the basic requirements and at least one of the minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field. -OR- Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. -OR- Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in A above. -AND- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: performing duties in the Museum Collections and Records Management Field. This experience includes but is not limited to a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include handling of artifacts and collection management; researching and cataloging museum collections; leading collections-related projects and working collaboratively to accomplish project goals; preparing museum registration documentation related to accessioning and deaccessioning actions; and participation in committees established to review museum acquisitions and deaccessions. Note: You must indicate the number of hours worked per week on your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Note: You must provide a copy of your transcripts with your application package if qualifying based on education to support your claim. -OR- COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take your number of semester hours in excess of 36 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Note: You must provide a copy of your transcripts with your application package if qualifying based on education to support your claim.
