About the Position: This position is located at Madigan Army Medical Center, Directorate of Clinical Support, Department of Pathology, Anatomical Pathology Service This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Operate instrument platforms to include tissue processors, embedding centers, microtomes, H and E Stainer, Special Stainer, and IHC platforms. Perform stains that require frequent modifications in preparation, and complex delicate processes to ensure proper staining such as handling of frozen sections, marrow biopsies, aspirates, needle biopsies, and specialized tissue such as eye and bone. Understand and comply with comprehensive accreditation requirements involving anatomic pathology operations. Prepare slides to ensure that cutting and staining techniques are adequate in displaying tissue cell structure prior to submission to a pathologist. Perform and record daily quality control on equipment and test procedures. Troubleshoot equipment failures and correct histology deficiencies immediately. Understand how to properly handle and dispose of chemical and surgical pathology tissue specimens.

Requirements

  • Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
  • This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. To qualify for the GS-07: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes preparing specimens and frozen tissue sections and examining body fluids, etc. for abnormalities in cell structure in a medical facility. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as clinical pathology, clinical chemistry, hematology and diagnostic microbiology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. To qualify for the GS-06: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes utilizing special stains which do not require microscopic differentiation to prepare tissue specimens for study by pathologists. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as clinical pathology, clinical chemistry, hematology and diagnostic microbiology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages. To qualify for the GS-05: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in receiving patient's specimens for staining and/or testing procedure. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled; or (b) successful completion of 2 academic years of study that included at least 24 semester hours in chemistry and/or in appropriate fields of biological science and successful completion of a 12-month program of education, training, and supervised experience in cytotechnology or histopathology that has been approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education.
