This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, Yard, Industrial Department, Structural Group in Baltimore, MD.  

Duties

You will be responsible for assisting journeymen Shipfitters or Welders with work that cannot be handled alone and also perform less difficult tasks alone.Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable team member. Typical duties include:* Using power and hand tools common to the trade.* Performing a variety of less difficult tasks related to shipfitting and welding, such as cutting batten wood for templates, tacking templates, center punching fabrication marks on steel.* Assisting in laying out, fabricating and erecting steel; and holding parts to be tacked and performs tack welding.* Assisting in the operation of power machines by holding and feeding metal parts.* Getting tools and supplies, carries materials and lifts and holds items in place while the Shipfitter or Welder is working on them.* Cleaning work area, tools and machines.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.

Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired.Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements:1) Likelihood of success in assignments which require interest, motiviation, and readiness to do simple work. (SCREENOUT)2) Ability to handle weights and loads.3) Ability to follow directions.4) Dexterity and safety.National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
